What about is test file for adjusting your PlayonHD for saturation, contrast etc.
Well when i did my calibration for my CRT setup, i used content which i knew had good color balance. The way i did it was i kept all my settings in the player at their defaults, and adjusted everything on my set's controls. The image quality and color reproduction is simply stunning, i've yet to come across an LCD or Plasma which can give my 2005 widescreen CRT a run for its money, and i've seen all of the classic offerings, in well-set-up homes with good source material. I'll wait for SED until i upgrade, it's just not worth it to step down in image quality only to gain the ability to render HD content in its native resolution.

I did most of my adjustments using a DTheater backup copy of True Lies, it's a great print and very neutral in colors, just slightly over-saturated. For my eyes its more difficult to calibrate from a test image than from moving pictures, but to each his own.

Good Luck!

i use the Monster calibration DVD to set saturation and contrast and whiteness and blackness.
it is a great way to set up the right colors and brightnes.

and as Krille said leave the settings in the player on standard,
set the tv for the right settings.

;)

Dirk, and forgive me if you've already posted about this, but since you are on the sdk4 beta fw, do you have any way to test if there is any issues with microstutters when playing back native 23.976 content?

And i think if fixed it will mean the player natively runs at 23.976, since how can you speed down a DTS or DD track without converting it to something like PCM first?

well sad to say but all my 23.975 (or 24/1.001) files play without stutter,
as it does on all used firmwares till now,

i just can`t get people to understand it is possibly a problem or setting in the tv.

also all 30/1.001 and 60/1.001 files do not have microstutter here.

;)

Hi Dirk.

What tv are you using? I get the impression some tv's are more susceptible to microstutter than others. I think plasma tv's don't show it whereas lcd's do.

My lcd tv does have a problem with microstutter or, rather, there is microstutter when viewing movies on my tv.

I have to admit that, for me, the microstutter seems to have disappeared. I put it down to settings in the PlayonHD as I have changed nothing on the tv. I am using the r4824 firmware, 24p off and 1080p 60Hz. I have found with previous firmware that different settings are needed to stop or reduce microstutter to an acceptable level. Sometimes 24p on, sometimes HDMI Auto after first setting to 1080p 60Hz depending on the particular firmware.

Whatever changes are made in the different firmware versions seems to alter something which affects the microstutter.

I am hoping the new firmware based on sdk4 will improve things. However, I am worried that the new sdk4 is for the newer, more recent chips and that the GUI 2.0 will bog things down on the older chips.

Is it essential that the new sdk4 has a new, fancy GUI?

Just some of my ramblings.

Cheers.

A.V.

i have an Samsung LE37M86BD (or was it M87BD can`t see right now)

but it is also a full hd lcd screen.

but i found out that swiching on the dynamic picture (which calibration is needed due to the higher contrast)
and switch off the movie plus and if available the motionplus setting will kill the stutters.

if i switch these on also here i have the microstutter on some movies.
but i also found out that switching the settings it feels like i need to do the calibration again,
so i haven`t changed it for over 8 months.

and as it works as it should i also won`t.

;)

Hi Kraakie.

You have a plasma screen. When the subject of microstutter was more active I noticed those with palsma screens didn't suffer with it.

My screen is lcd. If I set the output from the POHD to 1080p 50Hz the stutter becomes a lot worse. I have a Bluray player, DVD player and a sky+HD box, all outputs are 1080p 50Hz without a problem.

Any matereal from the POHD is unwatchable if the output is set to anything other than 1080p 60Hz.

For me it all points to the POHD being the cause. As I mentioned above, different firmwares behave differently. At the moment though, playback is okay. There is stutter but it is bearable.

This difference between plasma and lcd screens may be masking the issue. LCD's have 100Hz, 200Hz, etc., motion plus type settings to smooth motion on screen. There are\were settings specifically for plasmas in the POHD but I don't think they were for on screen motion.

If anyone complains of microstutter they, most likely, have an lcd screen.

From what I have read elsewhere, other media players\streamers have this issue fixed with the new sdk from Realtek. It will be interesting to see if\when this new firmware with sdk 4 plus GUI2 is released, it fixes the issue.

Cheers.

A.V.

@Peter5 - Have you ever read some of the WD forums, or the Roxio software forums? They are both successful companies - and their product support, patching and firmware release schedules are far far worse than AC Ryan

Just read an alarming thread about a missing Misc menu on the Mini2 running GUI2.0.

Please, please please add at the very least the Subtitle option back in before releasing the firmware for the Playon!HD. Personally i prefer what seems to be the new default(RealTek loves setting defaults dont they?) but alot of people will complain and i feel its better to have this as a setting, configurable by user.

Can anyone on sdk4/gui2.0 beta on POHD confirm there is indeed no more Misc menu, and what happened to the options from that Menu, specifically Subtitle mode?
