Post Re: MKV playing too fast
Why would you think that the PlayOn!HD would support variable frame rate files?

Post Re: Handbrake 0.9.5 MKV Conversion Problem
My solution:

Use Handbrake 0.9.4 to convert dvd to .mkv
Choose "High Profile", the anamorphic will change from strict to loose.
My movie only had one audio-file, it will create a 2nd one, just remove it.
Then just start the encoding (took about 3h for my 1h45min movie)

When finished, the movie plays fine on VLC but the timeline on the chapters are wrong.

Use mkvmerge 4.4.0 to re-mux the .mkv
(takes about 2min)

Now the new .mkv-file is 100% good to go on the PC and the Essential.
Fastfordward and chapter-timeline is good, no problem with anything.

I am wrong. The PlayOn!HD does support variable frame rate video - not sure why I didn't remember the Iphone 3Gs videos I play though I have to remux them into a standard mov container. The version that Apple uses causes the PlayOn!HD to not play the AAC audio.

I use SmartFFmpeg (a GUI front end for FFmpeg) to remux the mov container using identical streams.

You can find the free open source software here,

Smartffmpeg

It will also transcode and mux any codec and container supported by FFmpeg - which doesn't include mkv but I mentioned this software since it has been invaluable to me for dealing with mov/m4v containers. There are not many muxer/demuxers out there for mov. You can use TSMuxer with some mov containers but you will not have the option to wrap it in mkv - just mt2s and other bluray formats.

If you do the remuxing technique with 4.4 and are using an older PlayOn!HD firmware that do not support header compression you will need to turn off header compression for every stream within the container by going Extras, select stream 1, select no compression, select stream 2, select no compression, etc.

Then mux.

Header compression is turned on by default in MkvMerge starting with version 4.2

Post Re: MKV playing too fast
merged two topics about exact the same issue here.

@evoline,
i removed one of your posts (the ones in red) as due to merging it was double in this topic.

i however do see you have a link to an other topic concerning .mkv
is it the exact problem or an other one concerning mkv files.

as far as i followed this topic the issue is playing the file to fast.

in the other topic i saw in a flash something about chapters?

if it is the same please let me know and if it is also in the same player section (playonhd)
i will merge it as well.

if it is about an other issue concerning mkv i will leave it,
or i must come across an older topic concerning that same issue.
;)

disclaimer:
as we do prefer to try and not start new topics on the same issues.
as was done, that is why i merged it.
i know there are more topics about same issues .
if i come across them i will merge them of course.
just for these kinds of jobs at the moment we have not enough hands.

so please do some searching yourselves as well before starting new topics,
just to be sure it has not been handled earlier.

thanks for understanding, all.

;)

Is there any solution to this MKV playing to fast issue. Just bought my POHD mini, after startin to Rip all my DVD´s to my NAS. Using Handbraker 0,95 ofcause. I now feel somewhat of a fool, because I bought the player to play them files......

No solution to existing files as far as I know. I have reencoded a few , but that does things to quality . :(

With new encodings make sure the framerate is set to the correct value for the source , and not set to 'same as source'. That works for me.

Still waiting for someone at AC Ryan to acknowledge or refute this problem..

One thing I've noticed so far about ripping movies from DVDs so far is this - the framerate is always 23.976. So whenever I rip a DVD I just put that figure in.

However if you want to make sure and double check, look at the "Scan Log" in Handbrake. It will tell you what the framerate from the DVD is.

I have the same problem, mkv's made with handbrake playing too fast.
The thing is I can play these files anywhere, XBMC, VLC, and only have the issue when playing on playon mini.

So why IS this an issue for POHD and nothing else?
