Does this file play on the Playon!HD?

Sorry, tried the upload twice but it seemed to hang. I'll have to try to upload it elsewhere and post the link.

The other question I have, also concerning AC3 sound, is pretty specific. BBC HD broadcasts (for whatever reason) with incorrect PES start codes for the AC3 track. Some sat receivers and software apparently analyse the bitstream and ignore the start codes (and correctly recognise/decode the AC3 track). EyeTV and VLC are examples correctly handling the AC3.

Players relying on the PES start codes don't pick up the AC3 track (example: PS3). So my questions is: does anyone know whether the PlayOn!HD correctly plays these (ts) files?

If I can get the uploading issue sorted I'll post a clip. More information on the problem can be found here:

OK - try this: http://idisk.mac.com/isadewit-Public

File name is:
Doctor Who - Planet of the Dead trailer 1080p AC3.m4v

I also uploaded a raw (transport stream) EyeTV recording illustrating the BBC HD problem. VLC Player will recognise the AC3, but Handbrake won't, nor will the PS3. Note that this is a transport stream despite the .mpg extension - that's how EyeTV saves the file.

I have a few files which don't play. It is from 'band of brothers'. The files are .wmv.

Here is some specific info from mediainfo.
Code:
\\192.168.2.10\Volume_1\Band Of Brothers\Band Of Brothers - 01 - Currahee.nl-subs.wmv;Windows Media;;2.78 GiB;1h 10mn;;;Variable;5 689 Kbps;;;15.6 Mbps;;;UTC 2007-08-18 18:31:26.546;;;2;;VC-1;;;AP@L3;;;WVC1;;Microsoft;Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile;1h 10mn;Variable;5 000 Kbps;;;;1 280 pixels;720 pixels;16/9;;;23.976 fps;;;;;;24 bits;4:2:0;Progressive;;0.226;2.45 GiB (88%);;;;;;Dutch;;;;;1;;WMA3;;;M2;;;;;;;;;;;162;Windows Media Audio 3;;Windows Media Audio 10 Professional - 640 kbps, 44 kHz, 5.1 channel 24 bit (A/V) 2-pass CBR;1h 10mn;Constant;640 Kbps;;;;6 channels;;44.1 KHz;24 bits;;;;;321 MiB (11%);;;;;;;Dutch

Is this enough info, or do you need a sample or something similar?

Hi imdos,
Based on your file specification it should play. Can you also upload a clip of this file for us to test? ;)

Hi Roger,

Just to double-check ... you were able to output AC3 in both cases? If you analyse the files you will see that there are two audio tracks (in the .m4v file, an aac track and an ac3 track, and in the .mpg file an mp2 track and an ac3 track).

It's the ac3 that doesn't work for me on the PS3 currently.

Thanks,

Mark

Hello Mark,
For the m4v file, the AC3 setting used to produce the audio is in 6.1 channel that is why it gets a little jerky if you try to output the sound using your TV speakers which is only two channel, this type of audio need some sorround speakers or HTS in order to output the sound well. For the mpg file the AC3 audio is clear but soft. :)

Good news! The AC3 on the BBC HD transport stream is indeed soft, but doesn't present an issue if I crank up the amp :-)

Regarding the .m4v file ... it sounds like the PlayOn!HD supports the AC3 stream in an mpeg4 container. Pretty unusual for a player and good news! Any chance you can try outputting the 6.1 track to an HT receiver to validate that you do get correct multichannel sound?

Many thanks! I'm getting closer to placing an order :-)

Thanks! I've been looking for this application since last week. I got bugs with my codecs in my windows media player so I think PlayonHD could work perfectly! Thanks a lot!
