Movies not playing - how to check what is wrong ?
Hello all,
I have some movies on my playon HD2 which start to play, but after 1 second, it is switched to the next movie.
I thought it would play all movies and therefore I'm wondering how I can check what could be wrong ? There's no error message or notification, it just stops playing!
Any idea ?
EDIT : WOOPS; sorry; just saw I posted in the wrong subforum. Can somebody please move to "technical issues" subforum ?
Greetings,
Davy

Most probably a format that is not supported or a poorly encoded title.
Use MediaInfo to obtain the data on one of these files and post it here so that we can have a look at the details.

Re: Movies not playing - how to check what is wrong ?
Hello,
thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I have to become very ashamed now, because when I started to download the movies from the AC Ryan to my PC, I noticed they were only 1 Mb. So this is undoubtly the reason why it is only plaing 1 or 2 seconds.
Strange though that the movie was not copied correctly. I'm uploading one of them now to see what is going to happen.
Greetings,
Davy

Hope you get this one sorted out - I'll move this into the technical forum anyway Andy

Re: Movies not playing - how to check what is wrong ?
I'm afraid you've hit the one single nastiest bug on the ACRyan: it fucks up when ever it tries writing to an NTFS partition. Many of the other problems mentioned on this forum are down to this bug.
Your probably either used SAMBA or copied these file from a USB-stick in a telnet session. When you've freshly copied it, the file is usable full length. Turn the player off and on, only 1 to 8 MB of the beginning remains. I've had several of these. Don't bother trying again, you'll just lose your data again. Another way to encounter this problem is that a newly created directory suddenly turns out to be the video file you copied previously. Copy another file and you will have a directory, with the wrong name of course.
Connect your player to a windows box and give it a chkdisk. Until this bug is resolved, only use a windows machine to move files to your player. Don't be temped to "upgrade" to a newer version, as this bug is not yet resolved. New bugs and features in newer versions only make this bug show up worse. The recent beta's also didn't solve the problem.
Don't use any of the players functions that require it to write to the NTFS partition. These include scanning, bittorrent and the jukebox. Definitely don't use the GUI to move or delete files, as it will fuck up severely at some point, possibly leading to a reboot loop and data loss.
I work around this problem by keeping my new video's on a computer in the network. I play them from the ACRyan via the network. Every two weeks or so i connect the player to a windows box and do a "chkdisk and copy new files" ritual to get the files on the harddisk.
In every other aspect i think the ACRyan works greatly, so long as you treat it as a read only player.

If this is the actual problem, another solution is to format the drive(s) as EXT3 not NTFS and the problem disappears.
I agree the problem is with SAMBA/NTFS and nothing has been done about it.

Solution: Sell this box (or destroy it) and buy a second-hand notebook/computer with a good open source media center (MythTv, xbmc, even Yamj or whatever). Forget this bad memory and you'll be happy forever.

@pfff
Why don't you give it away? You aren't achieving anything other than raising your own blood pressure!!!
I tend to disagree with you. I have spent some (considerable) time optimising my Mini 2 with help from other users on this forum and I couldn't be happier.
I have used 40+ different models of media players over the last 10 years and the AC Ryan is by far the best once I spent some time getting it sorted.

I would love this solution, as my home is linux and mac only, well nearly. Why don't they make this the default? Windows users can use Gparted or the ext2fs minitools. That'll be more reliable than ACRyan's NTFS drivers. As far as i get it, the POHD2 needs the NTFS partition for its .Theatre directory, even though scanning is off. How can i disable it? Will i be able to copy to the EXT3 partition using SAMBA or USB using your solution?

Unfortunately, I use a Mini 2 which has no such constraints. And I use Mini Tool on my Win PC.... here's some info from my good mentor, jr_mac_ryan. I'm sure he would assist you further. http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=166&t=19431&p=134171&hilit=EXT3+POHD2#p134171
