Post Wrecked my HD Mini 2
Hi,

I got a new HD Mini 2 and tried to connect my portable Iomega hdd. This worked fine, i could browse my files on the hdd, start an mp3, view a photo, etc. I then started a .MTS file (Full HD AVCHD file from my HD Cam), which ran fine for 10 seconds and then crashed the box.

Power button did not respond, so i disconnected the power and reconnected it. The box booted, and worked fine again. I tried to start an m3u playlist, which looked good but did not work. The list loaded, but the files could not be found.. Probably a wrong referral in the M3U file.

Now for the fun part.. The box suddenly crashed again, without any action being taken. The screen went blank, and nothing responded. I disconnected the power again. But this time, nothing came back. And worse, even the powerbutton does not respond anymore.

When i connect power, de logo turns red. Using the powerbutton, I can get it to turn white, but then nothing..

I then tried the following:
- Disconnect every USB device and HDMI cable, disconnect and connect power. Nothing...
- Tried to flash the box using safe mode, but not any action on the USB device. I guess flashing is not an option anymore

How the hell can this be happening?? And maybe more important, can I fix this myself?

Many thanks in advance...
Thomas

Hello,

If you are not able to safe-flash any firmware using safe-mode method by holding the power button down with a USB-stick inserted to the Playon!? Please refer to this firmware post: viewtopic.php?f=175&t=18243

Then you are out of luck for self repair and have to take the unit back to your re-seller / shop for a return. If this is not a option you can also send you unit in to one of our service centers in Rotterdam or Singapore. You have these details on our support page.

You product is under full warranty if you just bought it so you will get a new one. This is of course not a general problem, but these things do happen and when they do it's frustrating.

Best regards,

Thanks for your reply. As the unit is actually from my father in law, this is a pretty bad situation to be in

I hope I don't have any issues returning the unit. It was bought at 'De Block' in Halfweg (The Netherlands) and the technical knowledge is not so high in that store. I will probably get some answer that it's my own fault and will have a lot of pain trying to explain that there's not anything that I could have done to stop it.

Anyhoe, thanks again for the information. If I have any issues with De Block, I'll take it straight to Rotterdam.

One thing to try before you return it, if the power light is going white it might actually be booting. Could you check your router (or whatever is providing DHCP) to see if it's been allocated an IP address, and if so is it ping-able?

If it is getting an IP, try pressing the TV Sys button if you haven't already, if that doesn't work try connecting it to a different TV or connecting it using component rather than HDMI.

The reason I'm suggesting this is, I tried setting up a Mini 2 for my brother and couldn't get a display over HDMI so I couldn't run the initial setup. I had to use component to complete the inital setup, after which I could use the TV Sys button to change resolution to HD and HDMI worked fine. I've not had that problem with any of my Mini 2s TVs, so I put it down to his TV being unable to display the low resolution that the Mini 2 defaults to.

Might be worth trying, just in case your Mini 2 has factory reset back to defaults.

Dear Ray,

Thank you, and you are right.. That is worth a try. I forgot to mention that I already did.. Sorry. I connected the RCA cables to the TV and still no image when powered on.

For that matter; I have a 2009 Philips 32" LCD, which defines why you are not getting an image when connected via HDMI. The first time I connected the unit, I got a message telling me that the resolution could not be displayed. Fortunately I already knew about the wonder button TVSys and this solved the issue. But now when I connect the unit, I get an error telling me that there is no input signal.

So, thanks again, but I already tried your suggestion.

Just to give an update:

On the 18th of may I returned the unit to De Block in Hoofddorp. It has ben sent to Quote Computers (??) in Oldenzaal for repair. Almost 2 weeks later, De Block has no information regarding status. They say it can take 4 to 6 weeks.

Sure, I can wait, but I find these repairtimes fairly rediculous regarding it's almost a DOA.

To be continued...

I guess that Quote Components will not repair your Mini, as they are a distributor.
You can easily figure out how this works:
De Block shop to headquarters: 1 week
De Block headquarters to Quote Components: 1 week
Quote to AC Ryan: 1 week
    AC Ryan repair: 1 week
AC Ryan to Quote: 1 week
Quote to De Block HQ: 1 week
De Block HQ to shop: 1 week

It is De Block that chooses this route for repair in stead of sending your Mini to AC Ryan immediately.

I am aware of the fact that the flame should not be applied to AC Ryan, but to De Block.. I didn't mention this specifically, but I don't blame AC Ryan but I do blame De Block. This is why Internetshops are whooping Retail's ass.
