ok,

so trying again with this firmware. So far I'm finding its restarting every so often then it continues scanning? any ideas why?

Again, can ACR staff please address previous posts? it's gone too quiet...

Grazy, I think it has to do with the scanning, I would say as you start to copy something onto the internal HDD, the machine realises there is new files to be added and starts scanning AGAIN! Then as there is a conflict of new files being added and scanned the machine goes into a kernal panic and reboots.

Now if I can figure it out, why can't AC Ryan?

Hi,

thanks for the info! I gave up with this beta! gone back to 5440. This still doesnt work though! although I used to have no problems what so ever! the mp3s have always been over 100GB so not sure why i cant scan at all in either firmware now.

I have posted a work around for me though! At xmas I was able to copy the theater and part files via the network to my PC (when the database was working). With the scanning off and the system disk checked and clean I copyied back the files and rebooted!

so far so good! no reboots and its read the db file and finding my content with no issues! Only problem is everything i have added since is not searchable!

This is why i think ACR should write a program for windows! you could plug ACR HDD in and the get windows to construct the file and paste it on. It would be a lot quicker, cleaner and reliable! and if you are not adding content everyday it would make the player at least function with scanning off!

any thoughts from ACR?

I don't think the Auto Scanning feature works, I have it turned off, yet when I put my USB drive or stick into the drive it starts to SCAN!!!!!!!!

Why? It shouldn't! I have it turned off!!!! When you select STOP SCANNING then try and copy files, it allows you to copy, but it after a while it starts to scan for no reason!

Extra code somewhere? Personally I don't want it to update my database until I have copied all my files to my HDD.

This has got to be the bug?

Also it rebooted whilst trying to add a Favourite Link, again it tried to scan the drive.

I've updated my 5440 firmware to 7716.
Mean reason for this were corrupted files now and then.

Before updating i removed the internal harddisk (500G, NTFS).
The update (full resore) was easy.
Before installing the HD into the POHD2 i let windows 7 checked my HD.
It found many errors on the HD.
Under windows I removed the ".Theater" folder and the "found000"files.
So i removed the residues from the HD before plugging in the POHD.
The POHD is configured for "no scanning" I don't trust this any more.

Back with the update to 7716 and the repaired HD the POHD works fine without any disturbing messages.
However I found that about 5% of my files ( say 30) were corrupted.
This means not able to browse the video or even opening a different movie than the folder indicated.
This probably means (i'm not sure, i hope..) that old file system was wrecked-up and the new files system can't cope with the old errors.
I've have deleted the corrupted files and replaced them with fresh ones.
For now the POHD2 seems to work OK.

One thing remains: When POHD creates the folder ".Theater" on the USB stick (NTFS) this recognized by windows as corrupted disk.
Deleting the ".Theater" files under windows and create a new one with CMD, mkdir ( see technical topic, USB corruption under my name) solves this problem.

For now: I cross my thumbs that the file system remains stable.
To be continued after more use...

This backs up what I have said about the SAFEMODE, it doesn't actually do what it's supposed to do. It needs to clean up old databases and related system files and resets it as if it's brand new, at which point it should ask the owner to wait while it recreates all the databases again from scratch.

The fact it doesn't do that means that SAFEMODE is pointless until it does so.

In addition, also proves that the auto scanning feature doesn't work. it simply doesn't turn off whatever setting you chose. It's this issue I think causes the system to crash.

I take it your meaning the ACR should remove hidden files/db files. Is this possible without deleting user content? or is this something a format does? I wouldnt want it to remove my database as such as like i say in numerous threads it takes ages to rebuild! What it should do is allow you to back these files up (Theater folder and part file) which once cleaned up are put back on the system! Assuming they are compatible with the newer firmware?

I absolutely mean ACR's SAFEMODE should delete and remove old hidden files/system files and database etc

The reason being is that like most firmware upgrades, changes can effect the outcome of the whole system. For example, they change changed the NTFS driver. That could have a serious knock on effect to the sub system and cause issues. Oh yes, it has caused issues!!!!! DOH!

It is up to the owner to either upgrade using the internal method, or if the machine becomes unstable, then a full SAFEMODE upgrade must be performed. In your case, it would be up to you to either perform the full or internal method depending on whether you experience issues without resulting in recreating the databases from scratch each time.

However, SAFEMODE must be a clean-up tool as well, not just upgrade the firmware otherwise it's pointless.

At this point, I'm guessing that a full format using the latest Firmware probably would remove all the issues, however, I am not prepared to try that on a hunch when ACR hasn't come back to the forums in weeks with a reply.

Also, it took me all day to copy the files onto my HDD and then ages to scan the whole database.

I'd also like to point out, a format of a customers HDD each new firmware is NOT acceptable way of getting rid of bugs.

If fully agree with this!
This type of problems are very valid reasons to return the player and get your money back.
Such loss of valuable movies and/or music, foto's even justify a compensation...

like you say you shouldnt lose your own data every firmware upgrade! and this isnt the case now, but it sounds like it would be the only way to fix it!

This firmware doesnt work for me, as it just keeps rebooting as soon as you turn it on! I'm not really prepared to ease my entire collection of Mp3s unless ACR are prepared to send me a new HDD to format and transfer to!

Does anyone have any idea what we need to delete to make it work and what to add? or is it only possible via refotmatting?

would be nice to hear what ACR have to say?
