The .Theater file is a folder that contains the data base files with the indices of your media content. The Clear history option should clear the data bases, but does not delete the .Theater folder. You must connect your Playon to your PC with the (blue) USB cable and then delete the .Theater folder from your hard disk.
After rebooting the Playon, this folder is immediately created again, but as long as you do not switch on the Auto scan option, it remains empty.

A safe mode installation of the firmware clears the entire flash memory and thus all settings. The hard disk is not affected by a firmware installation in either mode.

By reverting from 7716 to 5540, you will get back the NTFS and rebooting issues. See http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=165&t=15007.

I disagree, there is no change log to say 7716 gets rid of the reboot loop! and i was told the driver update has no effect on this!

Completely the oppersite in my case as explained already! I can't even build a database in 7716 as it just reboots before completing! As soon as i revert back to 5540 its fine!

Granted I don't use the box everyday but when i do it doesnt reboot as it seems to in this beta!

It is very likely that the reboot loop is associated with the NTFS issue. The scan data base in the .Theater folder is corrupted because of the NTFS issue and the reboots are caused by the corrupted data base.

In the beta 7716 firmware the NTFS issue should have been resolved and so the reboot issue may also have been resolved. It makes sense, however, to delete the .Theater folder created by a previous firmware and have the system rebuild the data base.

Do we know what's causing the reboot loop?

As for the last two updates (including last beta) I have had this problem the second it gets turned on? It used to happen on previous versions but got better for 5540.

I also wonder if the database i have constructed under 5540 is compatible with these newer firmwares? as when i revert back its ok again, on these newer versions its not?

I could try deleting the database and letting it rescan using the newer firmwares but i would like some input from the ACR team?

Hello,

The reboot loop has nothing to do with the NTFS handling. (As far as we know right now)

What we do know is that this reboot issue is related to the scanning / creation of the database file in certain files and / or structure enviroments. We have generated 1x enviroment in our internal testing that will 100% reproduce the reboot + scanning related issue. I personally think it has to do with certain files (picture files) + structures (how your folders and subfolders are stucruted) that causes the database to be currupt ...

Until we have a source of the problem / a 100% fix we can't be sure. But our engineers have received our crash reports and a lot of feedback from our costumers who have sent in reports.

Thanks for your feedback, but this is still a issue to solve. In most cases you can delete the .Theater folder and rescan with success. In some cases you will not and then you are forced to either remove your pictures / change your structure of your folders and files or disable the scanning function until this is sorted 100%, and acces your files quick with the use of 'Shortcuts' as a quick workaround.

If you have a .Theater folder from a previous firmware they will be compatible with other firwmare releases if they are not having this particular issues that I've mentioned above = corrupted database.

Br,

according to this it has nothing to do with the reboot loop! it's certainly there for me. I was also told my old database file is the same and i wouldnt have to rebuild it! I did in the end as the new firmware killed it!

Duivels, with respect, you are only the community moderator. I expect fixes of that magnitude to fix a major bug to come from an official member of AC Ryan to answer that.

Secondly, to fix such a bug by having to connect a PC to a media player is unacceptable way to fix an issue (if that fix turns out to be correct)

Thirdly and more importantly, I expect that SAFEMODE actually does exactly what they claim it to do, ie upgrade the media player to the next version of the firmware as if it's brand new, wiping the old cache, databases’ etc. as it installs. Otherwise we might as well use the upgrade option in the menu. The very fact that each so called SAFEMODE upgrade doesn’t remove old system files and reset the machine to factory defaults is so technically inane and stupid; I wonder how AC Ryan sells any media players at all.

If what your saying is true, AC RYAN needs to release a new firmware URGENTLY which incorporates a tool to clean up the old files from a previous firmware and resets everything to default again as if I have just bought the machine.

Then we can recreate our local databases and retest for the rebooting issue. The very fact my old database still keeps coming back proves that my machine is holding onto old databases.

I’m going to email AC Ryan as well. Although as normal, no replies!

Scan storage crashes and auto reboot problem still exists with firmware r7716

Since I purchased the PlayOn!HD2 in 2011-02, the player did not function as it should. Crashes occurred almost every time I used the player. I installed every new firmware, but not much improved. Until v9.5.3.r7317, this version worked much better.

However, I never got the music filters working (‘No data’ on Genre, Year, etc.). And the player crashes (auto reboot) as soon as (a certain amount of ?) music mp3 files with certain (?) tags were found when (re)scanning the storage. These files play all right, and the tag info is shown OK since r7317 (no reverse text any more). Some of these music mp3 files have been checked by Ryan support, but no problems were found.

I took every measure I got from support and that I found in the Ryan forums. I even changed the hard disk. But all in vain.

The beta firmware v9.5.3.r7716 did not change anything: the auto reboot is still there as soon as the player crashes during the (re)scan of the storage. After this, the sbx.db file is corrupt and the .Theater folder can only be removed after a disk check and repair.

The problem sequence on a ‘clean’ HDD (no .Theater folder) is as follows:
On Home page, no contents is shown in Recently added music and …movies.
1) Rescan storage – player is busy – sbx.db increases (monitored via network).
2) Storage aborts, increase of sbx.db stops.
3) On Home pages, new files are shown for some seconds in Recently added music and …movies.
4) Player reboots
After this, the player keeps rebooting as soon as the HDD becomes ready.

Any suggestions are welcome.
Regards, Arman

Agree with post above! every time i try and use it I wish i hadn't! I can just about deal with the speed of the menus, i can just about accept that the player has to do a little scan every time you turn it on for 5 - 10 minutes, but what is unacceptable is having to rebuild a database of mp3s of such a size (130GB) that the player has to be left on all night!

I think this is the 20th time i have had to do this! and I admit i was wrong about 5540 (i know slightly off topic as this is for the beta). This afternoon i added 3 new albums to the HD2, on one of them i renamed the folder once transferred. I went to make a cuppa tea and when i got back it was rebooting again!!!!! I reinstalled 5540, still did it, i deleted the two files and folder... still did it! I ended up doing yet the 100th checkdisc, then turned on the scanning feature and its been left going! hopefully it will finish sometime over night!

What is being done about this? There are no guidelines on specific file structures, no definite mp3 format/tagging format, not that there should be but at least if we knew what caused their machines to crash we could try it? I don't mind helping but ACR have not really made any come back to these comments in a while now? could we have an honest answer?

update2 left overnight, turned on TV - No signal! i cannot get the ACR to come up on TV so had to pull the power! Turned back on and it booted up, no harddisk appeared, it then rebooted!

I'm on the verge of throwing this thing across the room! I'm going to copy this over to 5540s thread as it's technically a problem (that has only just happened) with 5540. It was working perfectly for me up until now! making me wonder why? is it just crappy hardware that contributes to half the issues! Like i say this felt fairly stable until yesterday! WEIRD!

Update: 5 hours on and i have it asking for a file check! did this why! is it asking again? I have had to delete the theater folder do another file check and start again!!

Question, when a new scan starts from scratch why does the unit start scanning right in the middle of the file structure? it does not start at A and end at Z, it doesn't start at folder A then scan A-Z, then folder B and A-Z within it goes to folder B and scans from M? not very systematic really? is it?

ok,

so trying again with this firmware. So far I'm finding its restarting every so often then it continues scanning? any ideas why?

Again, can ACR staff please address previous posts? it's gone too quiet...

The reboot is not solved with this update.
i didn't have it this much as i do now.

as i watch a movie and after that go play music it reboots
i do not use the theater stuff, disabled it and remove the folder every time i copy stuff to the hd.
when i switch folders fromm pictures, it reboots.

But anyway thats the only problem i encounter.
