Post Playon freezes when using wireless
Hi.

I'm using the 4824fw for a while now icw a acryan "wifi-adaptor", to access my NAS (DLNA/UPNP-server).
With this firmware it went pretty good till a week ago.
Starting a " video" it plays for 4 seconds and stops. (screen freezes) wifi activity led stops and have to pull the powerplug.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

thnx

Try to safe relfash the firmware.

Or flash a newer version.

Hi kraakie.

Sorry..Nope... tried it (safeflash with same fw). didn't solve it.
Made it worse..
Unit now stops reacting entering folders on the "UPNP-server".

New fw is no option for me.
Because of the not supported settings for ap's with "hidden ssid". (not going to discuss about it anymore ;) )

Hi there.

I am using a wired connection and have never used wireless with the playon.

However, I did have a similar problem with wired networking and it was the IP address.

Are you using a static or dynamic IP address?

If you are using dynamic try a static address.

If you are using static then change the address.

It's just a thought. Might be worth a try.

Cheers.

A.V.

Hi A.V.

Thanks for the tips..
;) I allready tried that one too!! (And even played with the firewall rules that are active on my "NAS". (read as: disabled the firewall rules.)
I use fixed ip's, partly manualy, partly by reservation via DHCP. (yes I know what I'm doing ) ;)
Thanks for reading, reacting and giving some tips.
I've got the strong feeling that the wifi-adaptor is defective for some reason.
I used my BD-player to try some things today wireless and that one works fine.
(But doesn't recognise all formats that the POHD does).
Didn't want some network cabling in the living room, but I think I'm going to change that.

Thanks again!!

Pascal

You can check the dongle with your PC or laptop with the drivers from the AC Ryan support site.

Keep the following in mind, however:
Quote:
Wireless networking is generally not reliable enough for streaming HD video, therefore it is not recommended for Media Players. We are not saying that it won't work, just that you may encounter stuttering / lag problems. Of course, using Wi-Fi to copy files across a network will work fine. For this reason most Media Players omit Wi-Fi from their specifications and instead offer optional support via a USB dongle.

The maximum data transfer rate for Wi-Fi(g) is 54 Mbit/s with actual achievable rates usually being less than half of this. Wi-Fi(n) can achieve higher data transfer rates of up to 300 Mbit/s but, again, actual rates will be lower.

Hi Evert,

Thanks for reminding! ;)
This morning;
-dongle tested in pc.. looks okay
-once again reflashed the POHD. (like Kraakie said + back to 3582 and up to 4824 + reset to fact.default.)
Watched a "video" (41min) with BD-player (via wifi-conn) no problems.
And watched the same file with the POHD (also via wifi-conn).
Thought it was okay.. but at about 35 min. screen freezed for about 10-20 sec and then automaticaly resumed.
I understand limitations via wifi, but why is the BD-player handeling the files via wifi with no problems.

I thought i asked this once before?. Has the POHD some kind of 'buffer"?
Could it be that the/a BD-player has a bigger buffer, so glitches are better taken care off?

Thanks!

I do not know if the Playon has a buffer. Total available memory is about 0.25 Gbyte, which is not much for a buffer anyway.

Try to give the dongle a more advantageous place with a USB extension cable (maximum length 4 meters). Change the angle of the dongle to match the angle of the router's antenna.

Your BD players WiFi adapter may just be better than the AC Ryan dongle.

Hi,

This evening I had some time to change things, after I did manualy enter the ip-address for the wifi-adapter in the POHD last weekend.
Looks like A.V. had a point and I read something in the topic of the r7317 fw.(manualy = better than fixed DHCP leases).
At first i thougt it was okay, but no..The problem was still there.
This evening I unplugged my wired network and rearanged it so I could attach the POHD to it. Removed the wifi-adapter. Gave the POHD a fixed ip manualy.
And what happend....the D@#n thing still occurs.
Video plays and freezes after x time...(for x I can't say a time. it could be 4 sec it could be 4 min, or or or or..)...And resumes playing after some seconds between10-20 sec..)
Now I narrowd it down to 2 possibilities in my opinion ..( Keep in mind that the BD-player plays the file(s) without problems via WiFi).
1. The file format.
2. The POHD is at it's end.
At the moment i don't have a HDD built into the POHD.
So question@ Kraakie A.V. Evert(Duivels): What are your thoughts about it?

Thanks. BR.

I assume it is always the same video. If not, it is even harder to identify the problem. The video filoe may be faulty and the BD player's codec(s) will differ from the Playon's codec(s).

Just to be sure: is your static (manually assigned) IP address outside the DHCP range of your router?
If you previously assigned a "fixed" IP address by an indeterminate lease or a reservation, that IP address will be in the DHCP range, which is correct because the DHCP server still assigns the address. Now you started "from the other side" and should therefore not use the IP address which was assigned by DHCP before.

Did you reset your router and NAS after rearranging your network?

Copy your video/movie to a USB stick or disk drive and play it on the Playon from the USB device. That will enable you to determine whether the file is faulty or your network.
