Post Ghosting
Hi All,

Actually I have 2 issues (which I think are linked to oneanother)

When watching MKV files over my network often I get this "ghosting"on my television screen, most of the time in very busy scenes.
It seems like the POHD does't buffer enough.
While this happens the movie is running perfectly(no stuttering or whatsoever), sound is okay (also when using DTS).
When watching the same movie direct from an USB connected drive there is no problem.

When I look at the file in preview mode the POHD tells me it's streaming @ 50Mbit, but when I actually play the movie it drops to about 34Mbit.
For the speed I did a work around my network (using 2 short cables and a switch) and that didn't make any difference. So 50 Mbit preview -> 34Mbit full screen.
(these speeds are for this particular file, other movies do other speeds)

My PC runs on XP with a RAID 1 config.
Has a Gbit network card.
All cables in network are 5e
Gbit supporting router (ZTL by KPN)

any ideas on how to speed up my network?

I am a little surprised by the speeds you mention. I get these speeds with my Mini (1) in a 100 Mbit/sec network and would expect that the Mini2 (with gigabit streaming capability) in a gigabit network would achieve higher speeds than you mention.

Your PC (firewall or other running tasks) may be the bottleneck and/or the Cat 5e cabling. For gigabit Cat 6 is recommended. No other devices in your network which demand band width?

Hi Evert,

thanks for quick response.

I do have interactive television and my telephone also comes in through the same router.
As far as the firewall concerns I've opened up all ip traffic on internall ip-adresses so that should not give a problem.
No other devices in the network during tests.

tonight I will do some more test and give some more specs.
anything you'd like to know in particular. (and perhaps continue this thread in Dutch, as I presume you are Dutch)

many thanks for all help.

Post Re: Ghosting
I'm at home now and did some tests.
The Ghosting seems to have something to do with my PC.
I copied the file to my notebook and even wireless it passed the critical moments I encountered through wired ethernet om my PC.

My PC has an Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL Network Connection capabel to 1 GBit lan . but I doubt my router has the propper specs.
• 1 Gigabit Ethernet interface LAN
• 4- port autosensing 10/100Base-T & auto MDI/MDI-X Ethernet switch

I was blinded by the 1st line thinking the switch is Gbit capabel.

Still I think the ghosting is strange.

Thanks for your help, and if you have any suggestions on the ghosting part please post them.

If these are your modem/router specs, you basically have a 100 Mbit/sec network, because your network can never be faster than the slowest component.

Nevertheless it is strange that the ghosting disappears when you stream over wireless, because even a 802.11 N wireless connection is usually slower than a 100 Mbit/sec wired connection.

Check the settings of your PC's network interface card and the router for Quality of Service (QoS) settings that may impede the speed of your wired connection.

I followed the [How To] Stappenplan netwerk Win XP, Vista, Win 7 [Dutch]( viewtopic.php?f=102&t=2958 )so QoS is turned off in the PC.
I did not check my router for QoS.
Can I turn this off aswell?

Other than the Network adapter My POHD has nothing to do with my PC's hardware, or has it?

I could not find documentation on your router. So I do not know what settings are available. My router has an option to prioritize traffic to specific devices, which obviously implies a lower priority for traffic to other devices.
I must confess that I never read the Stappenplan, so I do not know what recommendations Dirk and Kraakie made there. I had installed my MIni before I knew the existence of this forum.

I do not understand your last question. The Playon has no influence on the hardware of your PC, not even on the NIC.

What I meant was:
The only thing POHD does is approach my harddrive on my PC through the Netwok adapter.
Type of my PCs' processsor or graphics card has nothing to do with this (when there''s no other active program on my PC)

My Router is the ZTE H220N . Can''t find the QoS there.
Is that the same as forwarding?

If you don't know the difference between Qos & Forwarding, I think it is about time you got one of your friends that knows more about networking than you to assist you.

The Playon does not directly approach your PC's hard disk. Data traffic within the PC (from your hard disk to the network adapter) is handled by the PC's operating system, for which the PC's CPU and memory is used. Data traffic over the network is handled by the network adapters and the router (and switches if any). Data traffic in your Playon is handled by the Playon's operating system, using the Playon's CPU.

Port forwarding is required when you want to make your PC accessible by the outside world, e.g. if you run a website or a mailserver.
Quality of Service relates to the allocation of the available resources of a device to different tasks.
