I have one 512 MB USB stick with a FAT 32 partition of 384 MB (for utilities like firmware, fonts, background) and a Swap partition of 128 MB. I stream form my server and think it is a waste to have a USB hard disk run for the swap partition only.

Absolutely correct, but take care that your are using a quaility usb stick, with good transfer rates.
Swap usage after start YAMJ:

I am seeing definite performance and stabiliy improvements on the new firmware with a swapfile - I am running mine on a hard disk though and not a memory stick.

Not sure if it is the new firmware or the usb-swap, but I get spontanious reboots whenever I select a shortcut on my mini1. So for now I've removed the swap. If the problem doesn't go away, I've to blame the firmware.

Should the SWAP Partition be created at the start of a USB HD or doesn't it make any difference where it is placed? What's the recommended size for a Mini1? Thanks!

With a hard disk the sectors go from the outside to inside. And because outside is the speed higher and the read / writing speed is also higher there.
If she signifies for the Swap partition better at the beginning lay.

128 MB is enough. With my DVR I never came in the normal functions more than 23 MB.
And with an ext3 error detection with fsck.ext3 on 77 MB and there he had to do quite a lot what what does not seem in the normal functions. There are therefore still reserves available.

My swap paritition is partition 2 on my USB disk and is 512MB in size, and the Mini sees / uses it with no problem.

I'm having mixed results with using the Swap-Partition. On the one hand I was able to significantly increase speed when copying files onto the Mini over the network. I found 4096 min_free_kbytes to be the best value. On the other hand the Mini reacts more sluggish, especially when playing a movie from the drive with the Swap-Partition and trying to access e.g. the language options or skipping forward within an mkv. Any ideas how to improve this? For the time being I deactivated the script. I'll probably handle it this way that I'll manually activate the script before copying large files via network.

Cheers,

Scuppa
