Post Tips for 1080 50p playback from usb hdd
Hi, I bought this media player for the purpose of playing back edited home video footage from my panasonic hdc-sdt750 1080 50p camcorder - with the smart android being a bonus for me. Overall I'm fairly happy with this player but was at first frustrated with jerky/stuttering playback of 1080 50p playback of files. I thought i might share some tips that might save other owners of these cameras some time and frustrations.

1. Encode in Mpeg2 (1920x1080 50fps at high bitrate)

After unsuccessfully trying to encode my video to various mpeg-4/h.264 codecs i gave up and tried Mpeg-2 at a high bitrate(I went up to 80mbs without problem). This resulted in no more stutters of video and audio, as a trade off your file size is twice as big.

2. Use the remote control's ^ v < > arrows to navigate and not the Wii style pointer during playback.

I find that as soon as i use the remote control pointer during playback it will cause stutter, but if i use ^ v < > arrows instead i have no problem.

3. If you do use a Mpeg4 h.264 codec, play file then shortly after press the return button and then resume playback from last point. I find this makes the plaback smooth again as long as i don't press any buttons on the remote control(most of the time).

I hope this helps some people.

I do prefer to use Mpeg4 for the smaller file sizes - If anyone has any tips to get stutter free 1080 50p Mpeg4, H.263(4), AVC ect. please share them, it will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback!

In many cases when you have variables in files in terms of codecs or FPS in general, you might have to adjust your screen resolution/hz to get the sync of the files better.

If you have 50fps files, perhaps you should try to use 1080p50hz (or 720p50hz if you got HD ready TV) as defined screen resolution setting to sync the TV's HZ and the file. Same goes if the files have 25fps. 25x2 = 50hz is more synced than having 60hz. If you have 29.9 or 30FPS files, then it would make sense to use 60hz as this is more synced.

If you move the mouse cursor during movie playback it will stutter no matter what. This is unfortunately part of the Android 2.2 platform. Our developers have been looking into this, and so far I've not heard that this would be fixed. To avoid this, simply don't move the remote / cursor while watching movie files for now.

Hi Mikael,

Thanks for the reply.

I own a Panasonic Viera P50V20A plasma TV capable of running 1080 50hz. I have already set Veolo from automatic to 1080 50hz in settings and my TV correctly detects that it is receiving 1080 50 hz through HDMI. As i said, files encoded to Mpeg2 at 1080p 50hz playback perfectly! :)

It is only when I encode 1080 50p to an Mpeg4 format ( i have tried various codecs and formats) I have issue with stutter, but if i play file > press return on remote > resume playback shortly afterwards, i get smooth play back again (most of the time). I have no problem with other framerates.

Thank you for confirming the mouse cursor issue during movie playback, i am glad that this has been looked into.

Now that i use Mpeg2 for 1080 50p video files I'm overall happy with this player. I thought i should share my solution for other people who own these types of video cameras (1080 50p), and want smooth playback of their edited footage. It worked for me - it might work for others, Picture quality is still excellent but file size is larger.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your additional feedback. I will put this to the test and naturally report this if this would be the case in our tests as well!

FYI, this is the first we hear about this so far.
