Tata has a valid point - if the player is idle, no process should be hogging 90% of the CPU. The comparison to the SDK3 firmware shows that AC Ryan need to do a bit of investigation here. An acknowledgement from on one of the staff members would be useful - I would hope this kind of problenm is already being looked into

@Tata: You may be right. I just copied this from the German forum without being able to assess the reliability of the statement. That is why I wrote: "If this is true ... ".

Hello,

I am the writer from the German forum.
However it was about it, a person thought dvdPlayer applikation is only for normal DVD.
Here is the original:
viewtopic.php?p=120461#p120461

@ Duivels
The DvdPlayer executable is the core program of the player and performs all tasks. This is right.
But that is still long she must not use so many resources all times.
There has tata right.
I thinks that is the scanning (indexing) function ? This work in the background, even if autoscan is off.

@ tata
I see the Swap partition is activated.
If you have changed that yourself, or is used swap from player original. Ordinarily it is not indicated when i see in Telnet under "free". I have integrated the Swap partition myself. However, maybe it does dvdPlayer applikation also without under Linux is indicated ?

And how you have done the announcement of the resources (your graphic arts) ?

Greeting Steffen

@Steffen: Thanks for your explanation. I just tried to moderate between the German and the English forum. I am not a Linux specialist at all.

No problem. If I can I try to help.
Unfortunately, my English is very bad.
I can not write everything as I might. In particular if it is a little more complicated.
And it costs a lot of time there I translator programme must use.

Dear friends,

Thanks to all of you for your responses to my point. I appreciate. Since my post created some attention, I must indicate my device's setup.

@s-n1965
My device has two attached external storage; 4 GB Sandisk USB-stick, 500 GB WD 2.5" USB disk. On the USB-stick I have an optware installation which was installed during firmware v7.3.5.r3582 to run torrent client. Since then, when I upgrade the firmware, I just update /usr/local/etc/rcS file to start optware.

The artwork is from "htop" (optware).
Swap space is on the USB-stick which was created by me.
The indexing service is off.
No optware services were running when I took the screenshot.
Running services were: samba, httpd (for web remote), gtalk which were all from the firmware.

Based on my Dreambox C++ plugin programming experience, high cpu utilization occurs when the main loop in main() has no pause (sleep) inside. If the loop has even a few milliseconds of sleep, the cpu utilization decreases. This is just a guess of course, I wanted to share.

I am open to test your suggested scenarios. I can turn off swap space, kill x process and share the results with you. Because I really like my mini, and the new firmware is really nice and functional.

Regards.

@ tata
Thanks for your answer.

"htop" I have found and download the htop_1.0-1_mipsel and libncursesw5_5.9-4_mipsel.
But I must repack the FW. I think with optware it is better, around it is easier and faster to tested.

With "top" I do not have 90% of extent of utilization.
30% with switch over and 95% with Internet.
Otherwise normal, but I have a DVR not Mini.

The indexing service runs even if it is off. I notice this if I do Record from DTV. After Record the Recordfile is in Recently Added Movies. But, funnily not always.
I would have the indexation completely out, thus, e.g., the .Theater folder also no more is provided. No automatic one write on the hard disk, if I it not expressly does.
This is also the biggest change compared with the old SDK.

The new firmware is really nice and functional, yes. But not stable.

I have a Mini 2. Can I install optware, I think so. Is there a simple "cookbook" posting on how to?

Thanks

Jim

Nobody on these forums.
In the past FW were released on an almost every-6-month basis. But although a new one is clearly due I think it will take a lot longer to release a proper one. There are too many botched issues in r5440 that need proper fixing.
