PC Format magazine has reviewed the AC Ryan Veolo and are very surprised at how bad the media player is.

For £180 GBP they've rated it at 43 / 100

With the following points:

Good: Strong HD media playback
Bad: Awful Flash integration
Bad: C'mon, Android 2.2, really?
Bad: No Android Market

Final comment:
'We expected much more from ACRyan than this.
It may be updated later but avoid right now.'

This is a very damning review from PCFormat !!

Hi,

thanks for the feedback. We have of course also seen this. There are in comparison to this also several positive reviews. We do appreciate everybody's feedback and criticism. To quickly reply to the bad points here:

1. we have tested several android phones + players as well and the flash performs accordingly to the specs. Do keep in mind that it's flash 10.1 at this point and that it works much better than on a lot of other units. You are able to watch youtube movies and other flash sites that basically support flash 10.1. Of course the experience cannot be compared with a desktop pc just yet.

2. Android 2.2 has been chosen because it's the most recent available version that has been tested and working. Android 3 is not possible since it's closed and for tablets mainly. Android 4 has been released very recently and misses a lot of features in terms of media / flash. The OS has to prove itself first i guess.

3. since our latest official firmware version 849 you have the official android market included. This makes it much easier to grab all your favorite free apps directly with the veolo. No need to go for .apk hunting on the net.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

best regards,

You see guys, this is what happens when there are too many marketing guys in your company. I was kind of surprised to see Telegraaf (one of Holland's biggest newspapers) in the review list. Well first of all, it was not in the paper but only on their website. The parts you copied were only the positive parts of the review! Some points they did not like:
- Een minpunt van de Veolo is dat het niet standaard Universal Plug & Play (UPnP) ondersteunt. (A drawback of the Veolo is the lack of UPnP support)
- AC Ryan geeft toe dat niet in alle gevallen de standraad mappen zoals 'Mijn video's gevonden kan worden en dat het beste is om een nieuw openbare map te maken. Erg omslachtig allemaal. (AC Ryan admits that not in all cases the standard folders such as My Videos can be found and suggests to create a new public folder. Very cumbersome.)
- De meegeleverde handleiding is een aanfluiting. (The manual is a joke)
- Helaas is het afspelen van video’s niet in alle gevallen stabiel. Zeker bij het afspelen van grote bestanden kunnen er haperingen optreden. (Unfortunately playing videos is not always stable. Especially when playing large files hiccups can occur.)
- Het is jammer dat het product aan de binnenkant gewoon nog niet af is. (Too bad the product is not finished on the inside.)

And to make it even worse, this review is "quoted" to give 4 out of 5 stars. But there is no rating at all! Some stuff was good, some bad, some not ready. That's all they said.
I understand you need good reviews and I'm sure you will get them. But selective quoting and inventing ratings is just pathetic. Earn it and be honest. Nothing learned from the past. SHAME ON YOU!

Dear Vanhal,

thanks also for your feedback once again. First of all the review rating is not always an exact match to the review score. It gives an overall impression of the review. For example, if we are given a Silver award which is clearly not based on 5 stars, we still need to apply a star rating in our web system.

Regarding the contents you are right obviously we mention the good parts. Everybody can read up on the review on the web anyways and we are honest by posting the source so you can access it yourself.

to reply quickly to the minus points given by telegraaf themselves:

1. UPnP is not yet included because it's not natively supported by android. As android is an open source platform you know there is a countless number of apps you can extend your android experience with. This counts for UPnP as well - there are several apps which enable you to stream from upnp devices for example bubbleupnp.

2. usually it's not recommended to share your own libraries and i think even windows has a kind of security mechanism so you cannot share your user directory. Otherwise the people in your network could access that! Of course you can share a folder on your hdd via samba. That is basically a windows setting.

3. There is no full manual at this point. The Android menu is pretty much self explanatory and the rest comes through apps. For every app you use, you can visit the developers website where usually an online manual of some sort can be found. The basic steps are covered in the included Quick Start Guide in our package. It explains how to connect VEOLO and for example how to install an app. If you feel you need further assistance please feel free to contact us via our official support channels.

4. the supported video material which is on the box plays without problems. Problems can occur at this point when trying to play DTS-HD or .iso material as this is not officially supported. If you still have issues you can contact us obviously and we can try to help you out finding the source of the problem. Playback also depends if you're using wifi or wired connection. Unfortunately it wasn't clearly mentioned what the exact problems were referring to.

5. since the release of the product we have already released a new firmware which also includes the Android market. As this product is new we are trying to improve the way how it works constantly. We are willing to improve the end-user experience in the future by giving you more opportunities through frequent updates.

I hope you will read through other reviews as well which are maybe a little bit more technical to build up a solid opinion.

Thanks for the feedback again & best regards,

@vanhal - thanks for that, normally when companies publish reviews on their products you expect them to be the truth, but to say they got a 4/5 stars when there's no stars given is just a complete lie !!

As for PCFormat - I trust a lot of their reviews and they loved the previous products HD, Mini & HD2 Mini2. But this review doesn't do any favours for ACRyan at all. It does however put them in a bad light for going down the Android way.

As the famous saying goes 'If its not broke doesn't fix it' - but to tally change from one OS to another just confuses me - specially when there's quite a few Android devices that have crashed and go on reboot loops - I can only see bad things for this device !!

@Arne - 'For example, if we are given a Silver award which is clearly not based on 5 stars, we still need to apply a star rating in our web system' - Why dont you just add a Silver award like other companies do?? Instead of having to convert them into stars ??

When it comes to reviews there are good ones and there are bad ones. You should try to find reviews that in your opinion are trustworthy since everyone who reviews or tries a product will have different expectations to begin with. This is very normal and therefore the grades will always differ. Arne already mentioned that our back-end database on our website must be filled in with stars or you can't upload it, this is how our website works.

If you have issues or concern regarding this you can always drop a email to marketing at acryan.com as our marketing personal don't read our forums as this is for support / community.

Arne and Mikael, you missed my point completely. Don't bother going into technical details about the product, my problem is the way AC Ryan is misleading potential customers by cleaning up reviews. Yes, people can always read the original article. Again not the point. I've looked into the other reviews and found even more discrepancies.
Hartware- Germany : no rating, but generally positive review
Hardware Magazine Malaysia : no review online (yet)?? Google found nothing??
Telegraaf : already discussed
3dGameman : 100% kick ass = 5/5 stars (OK)
KitGuru : 8/10 stars = 4/5 stars (OK)
Hardware Woensdag : no rating, lots of criticism in the report
Hardware.info : "good basis but needs improvement", "cannot be recommended", this is NOT 4/5!!
Hardwareluxx : seem to be happy with it (OK)
Guru3D : "recommend only it if you are the gadget kind of guy", that's no 4/5 stars...

So, out of 9 "quoted" reviews, only 3 (maybe 4) really hold up. I don't care if your system only works with the star rating system, change it if you have to. But what you've done here is just plain LYING on several parts. No way to do business and I would be interested in how the writers of these articles feel about this. Again, shame on you.

What does my criticism on AC Ryan when it comes to marketing have to do with selling a player? If you don't like this (in my opinion justified) criticism, why read and respond to it? Don't try to shut people up because you don't like what they say. If some of my statements should be wrong, please feel free to correct me.
