Post Re: [Official] Firmware_PV73100_v7.4.x.r5440
I would just like to wave a flag for AC Ryan and the PlayonHD (73100). I am happy.

File transfer works good (not startling) but adequate - eg transfer 2Gb file network speed settles on 2.5Mb/Sec so about 10-15mins. The SAMBA share works well and I can see the PlayonHD as just another shared computer drive on my home network. Copying is just drag and drop. I have a 10/100 wired network.

I stream my movies (SAMBA Share) from my home NAS (Openfiler) and use YAMJ to organise and display them on the PlayonHD - this works fine, I've learn't a few NFO and YAMJ tricks along the way to make the menus look good. So far I haven't found a common format (avi, iso, vob, mpeg, m2ts) etc that has caused problems or couldn't play.

My only issue is the home page search and population of recently viewed files (which requires a HDD search) - the box stops responding while doing this - everything waits before you can navigate away and it happens each time you return to the home page !! - This is a know issue and I am confident it will be configured in future to be able to be switched off.

Technically the machine is working well, I can surf YouTube, channels etc with this version I have viewed my Picasa albums online. I am slowly converting my DVD / VHS collection to digital files and building up the library.

I would really like an HTML browser built into it so I could watch on-demand TV through it

I think the native search/library for photos, music and files cumbersome and if something similar to YAMJ could be implemented for these that would be better and more useful. (I have approx 30,000 music files - so good searching / indexing and management is necessary).

I also tried DLNA PnP watching videos streamed off my Win7 PC and this worked great too.

So BIG UPS to the AC Ryan team - an outstanding product keep tweaking sort out the consumer usability issues - remember in the spirit of Apple you don't have to be technically great - just cooler to be successful.

I think you misunderstood Macp. He meant the USB ports of the PC, not of the Playon.
For him a USB port on the front side of his PC did not work with the Playon, but a USB port on the back side of the PC did work.

Well, I tried to connect directly to the machine.
Can I still see no devices unknown: (
Help me, please.

1. If you need network access, you should downgrade to r4824. You will have endless trouble with all the v7.4 releases, including r5400.

2. When you connect to your PC via USB, make sure you connect it to the Slave-USB-Port of your player -- not the USB port you use for thumb-drive.

Sorry, but not good. Unknown Device.

Well my HD just crashed with all of my backups that I now have to redo. 1.5 tb of video now gone. I've never had any problems with any of the other ones. I would suggest to anybody that you do NOT upgrade to the new GUI 2.0.

No, not right. At least, not in my personal (short) experience.

Everything works. It just works very poorly/slowly when you compare it to 4824. Menu items skip because button presses on the remote doesn't seem to register. DLNA (or DMR as it is labelled on the player) would freeze and drop out.

Network transfer speeds weren't stellar to begin with, even with the older firmware. But this new one will slow it down to a crawl. Streaming video from the Internet that used to work fine now keeps buffering every 2 or 3 seconds.

There were other minor problems with the firmware that irritated me too much and I went back to 4824.

I tried r5400 for 2 weeks and liked the new GUI but it gave me so much trouble that when I restored back the r4824 I felt like I had a major upgrade! Behind the new GUI r5400 is sluggish, problematic (freezes/rebooting/etc) and the network is unusable! I believe it was responsible for the corruption of a bunch of files on my HD. Don't go there, it is not worth it!

I went to check out the HD2 and DVR and was surprised that they are just as sluggish as HD with the new GUI. It is strange that these players are capable of playing 1080P movies smoothly and yet can't handle the simplest text menus properly.
