Do you really have a network connection? It seems that your mini didn't get an ip-address from the AE. Please check this first. What is the ip-address?

I do have succesfully created a WORKGROUP folder via Browser-->Network-->Shortcuts. So this means my Playon mini is in connection with my iMac. But to my surprise the WORKGROUP-folder is empty. I can not see any folders here. Why?
You should not create a WORKGROUP on your mini. Your conclusion: "So this means my Playon mini is in connection with my iMac." is not correct. You should be able to connect to a workgroup, not create it on your mini. That's also the reason why it is empty. (Or I don't understand you correctly).
If there is a workgroup in your network your mini should display it. Sometimes this doesn't work and even though it complicates things a bit, it's not a big disadvantage.
Did you set (windows) sharing on on your Mac via system preferences?
If so, you should be able to create a shortcut from your playon to your mac, by simply putting in the ip-address of your mac and the user-id/password (or guest?) for accessing the share in the shortcut.
