I wouldn't say your statement "AC Ryan know exactly how can eliminate this error" is correct. Essentially you're asking the users to dig into the firmware and make their own solution or abandon the internal HDD in favour of a USB device. Like many users, I bought this specifically because of the internal drive so I could store media locally. If that were my preference I'd have bought something like a Cyclone Micro for a fraction of the POHD price and stuck a fat pen drive in it.

As I and no doubt others are not linux users the 'solution' is not very helpful.

Do AC Ryan have a buy back policy for people unable to use the devices functions due to design limitations. More than likely under the UK's Sales of Goods Act this would be classed as a misrepresentation and entitle me to a refund.

thanks
Paul

I did not write A.C.Ryan know where the mistake lies. But "AC Ryan know exactly how can eliminate this error"
I can fancy the Realtek knows where the mistake is, but these are speculation.

But what is not speculation is, Steffen (s-n1965) knows exactly where the error is and how to get him removed.

They only need to ask him. But I think, A.C.Ryan (in particular Arne Schlie) is too proud to apologize to steffen.

On ext3 to put is natural only one makeshift.

First of all can you let us know what is the issue of the set? How long have you been using the it and which firmware version does it come when you purchased it?

Hi Roger,

The unit is 18-24 months old and is currently running r7317. I can't recall the original FW version but the board is a 1073DD.

I've only noticed the problem of zero byte files over the last month or so but thats not to say ther weren't there. We've been using the box more often in the past month or so catching up on things we've missed so the problem has been more noticeable.

I plugged the unit into a PC and ran the checkdisk. This recovered a couple of files but I have lost about 10 this time round. Clearly, running CHKDSK isn't the ideal workaround.

Does anyone know what Realtek are saying about this? If the problem lies with them, what response are we / AC Ryan getting on this issue?

thanks
Paul

Post Re: zero bytes files and lost files
This has happened to me twice so far, on two different firmwares.
First time half my movies folder was unreadable, the other time, the whole movies folder just dissapeared (from my POHD)
As an IT consultant, I would say that this usually happens when a file(s) is in use then the drive loses power.

anyway, my solution (using Windows);
plug in the drive onto a computer
if windows asks you to repair the disk, say yes (this is basically the GUI for CHKDSK)
otherwise, you can start command prompt, and run: chkdsk /f /r /x

I've got about 500gb used up, with alot of series and movies. It took about 12 hours for my chkdsk to complete!!! so make sure you don't disconnect or your PC won't shutdown/lose power while this is running.

chkdsk /f is sufficient.
chkdsk /r does not need be, because the file allocation table is destroyed.
See here for more information but it is in german:
