Post All data lost - please help
I just came home from a business trip and found that all data on my PlayonHD was missing. It is not clear what happened, Maybe, the wife, grandma or son played with the remote and accidentally deleted everything.

I am holding out hope that the data can be recovered for for 2 reasons.

1) When I check the Samba share free space it still reports as all the data is there. Meaning from my Win 7 machine it says "1.03 TB free of 1.81 TB" which is perfect, that is what it should be. But, when I go to the share is says "This folder is empty" Aaargh

2) Pretty much same from a shell session. df shows that /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD1 is 43% used, though du and ls show nothing there.

Can anyone provide ideas on how to recover this hidden information? (BTW, I have already rebooted the system)

Thanks.

/tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD1 # df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 39104 39104 0 100% /
/dev/mtdblock/2 16384 2072 14312 13% /usr/local/etc
/dev/rd/0 40 40 0 100% /mnt/rd
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 1953022048 838293136 1114728912 43% /tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD1
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 155555 11972 135551 8% /tmp/hdd/root
/tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD1 # ls -l
/tmp/hdd/volumes/HDD1 # du

You can try it sometimes with a Restore software.

Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/products) is supposed to be pretty good for un-deleting files. Maybe it helps in this case as well. It's from the makers of CCleaner and Defraggler, both great tools. Good luck recovering your files!

Good news. I found a previous post that talks about the same problem. The solution was to connect the PlayonHD to a PC using the supplied USB cable and then running chkdsk on the drive.

I was concerned about chkdsk making things worse, and I took the risk anyway.

Turns out that chkdsk recovered about 99% of the data.

What a relief. :)
