[HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
Code: Estimated Time: 4 min Level: Easy Operating System(s): NA Category: Networking Firmware: Tested with v7.06.r1757
This HOW-TO describes how to create a shortcut to one of your shared network PC's. This can be very useful when you have a password on your share. This way you don't have to fill in your username and password every time you want to access this share. Also if you do not see your workgroup in your network list (for any apparent reason what so ever) this ability allows you to access your share anyway. First we need to know the IP address of the PC that holds your shared folders. If you know how to get it or you already know than you can skip these first few steps: - Go to your Start Menu
- Click on 'Run'
- If you do not have the Run program in your Start Menu by default then try and look it up in your start menu program folder under a accessoires or use the search function.
- Type in 'cmd' (without the quotation marks).
- Your command prompt has now been started. Type here 'ipconfig' (without the quotation marks).
- You will now get a list with specifications.
- Read out the IP address behind the spec that says 'IP-address' (obviously).
- In my case this number was 192.168.1.21 (most home networks have the same IP range, most of the time only the last number is different.
Let us now create a shortcut in the Playon!HD. - Turn on your Playon!HD, if you didn’t already and go to the Network option in the Browser.
- Go to the folder ‘My Shortcuts’ and press the enter button on your remote.
- Press on the remote control on the button ‘MENU’.
- A menu will appear asking you what to do; select ‘Add’ and press enter button on the remote.
- You will now see a menu with two input fields and an IP address box.
- If you have a password on the PC you have your shared folder on you can fill in your username and password into the two fields by navigating to the field and press enter. You will now get a onscreen keyboard where you can type in your username or password. Remember that username and password are case sensitive so use upper and lower case like you do on your PC.
- In the IP boxes you can type the IP number that you just looked up on your PC. You can type them in by using the numbers on your remote control.
- If you have done this you can press ‘OK’ and the shortcut will be created.
- You can now try out your new shortcut.
If you need to edit your shortcut details you select the shortcut you want to edit and press the ‘MENU’ button on your remote control and then ‘Edit’ instead of ‘Add’. If your PC is part of a domain you can specify this by selecting the button ‘Detail’ in the Add / Edit menu. You will get two more boxes for your domain and host name if needed. You can also create a label for your shortcut, replacing the default IP address and username in your shortcut list.

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
Could be great to be able to add full path
For examples for my children, got some media in my local hd and on the server : localdrive/videos/child //server/media/video/child
Actually, i can just have server/media in my shortcuts...
It could be gret to be able to go from one to other directly whithout having to go back to the root folder and then drill down to the specific subfolder...

Hi pyros,
Good idea (+1). Will send this suggestion to our tech department. Don't know if this is an easy change. Will let you know.

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
For information, on my old media player (an old xbox with xbmc) they've got some sort of virtual container wich can contain several shortcut.
So in my case, for the movies section, just have ONE entry "Child" with contain both local and networked folder. The list displayed contain mixed content.
Since the navigation from one folder to another is quite slow in the POHD "browser", we need to access as directly as possible the our wanted destination.
Perhaps could be done with some "favourite folder" in the media library as well in a futur FW...

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
+1, and move SHORTCUTS up 1 level (put in in the list with USB CARD HDD etc), so you can open it right when you open the browser.
also make it possible to put adresses directly to certain folders un the internalHDD, as well as the NETWORK as well as CARD and USB etc.

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
I only get 4 boxes to type in my IP, am I missing something ? Are the first 4 digits enough ? It dídn't work when I tried this. Above the 4 boxes it says IP specific fileserver ( or in Dutch: IP specifieke bestandserver)

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
Any update on whether shortcuts can reference sub-folders directly?
Also any update on moving shortcuts to the root menu system? As it stands, shortcuts actually take more clicks to go through for a network share than just going through the menu manually.

Re: [HOW TO] Create a network Shortcut
hi there,
same problem here. i have a freecom nas 400gb working fine for a year now, and recently bought the playon mini. when i try to connect to my nas, de playon replies with a logon-failed message. even with the admin username and password i can not logon. read the forum, tried your suggestion (didn't help), but no connection can be made! this is a familiar problem, when i search the forum. is there already a solution?
with kind regards, gus

I d like also to make shortcut which will forward user directly to directory. But the virtual keyboard does not allow me to type / or \ characters, these buttons are inactive. What to do?
