Post USB Slave Port - Make it work with External Drives
The purpose of the USB slave port is so you can transfer files from your PC to the PlayON without having to disconnect your hard drive from the PlayON and plug it into your PC.

I DO NOT have an internal hard drive inside my Playon HD - I have a USB hard drive attached. Apparently when you connect the PlayON to your PC via the USB slave port, the Playon will NOT show as an external drive unless you have an internal hard drive inside the PlayON HD. You can not use the USB slave port to copy files from your PC to an external hard drive (attached to the PlayON HD).

This is quite misleading as there is nothing in the promotional info that says the slave port only works with an internal hard drive.

I could use ethernet but it's at least 3 times slower than USB 2.0. Or I could disconnect the USB drive from the Playon and attach it to my PC to transfer files that way, however this is a pain. Also when you try to use "Safely Remove Hardware" once you've finished transferring the files, most of the time it says it can't disconnect it as it's still in use, even though the transfers finished 5 minutes ago!

Please add the ability to transfer files from a PC to an external USB drive attached to the the Playon.

understandable request ;)

but what you are asking is for the pohd to act as an external HDD,
to see an other external HDD connected to it ?

this is only possible if the pohd is acting as an USB-hub,
which it is never sold as one.

but who knows maybe the DEV team is considering it?

;)

I never ever use the 'safely remove hardware' option and never had a problem. If you still feel reluctant, just shutdown your pc before removing your external HDD.

Succes

I think it could / should be possible, because both my router and Iomega Home Media Network Drive both have a usb port to add an external harddrive to network storage.
In case of the HMND the external disk is added to total capacity and shows up as a folder, so maybe a sollution to the question?

Post Re: USB Slave Port - Make it work with External Drives
but why not connecting the external usb drive directly to the pc,
or am i totally off here.

you ask to recognise a external usb hdd drive connected to the playonhd,
then you want the playonhd connected again by usb to your pc to
store and copy files to the attached usb external hdd on the playonhd,

seems a bit strange as you are able to directly connect that same external drive
to the pc at once and probably have even an faster connection,
then if you would use the playonhd as a Hub.

or am i really mistaken here????

;)
