Post USB Wifi dongle slower speed than LAN connection
I've bought the PlayonHD player last week and I'm very enthousiastic about the possibilities this piece of machine has. I installed NZBGet with plugondevice.com software. With LAN connection is downloads with an average of 1150 kb/s. Yesterday I received the AC Ryan usb Wifi dongle and plugged it in. With Wifi connection the download has a lower average of 880 kb/s. Also after reboot it takes very long before the wifi connection is made.

I make connection with an Apple Airport Extreme base station which has Wifi-N network. My question is why the connection is slower with the usb Wifi dongle with N-network connection than the LAN port. I would expect the LAN connection should be slower but it isn't. I installed the latest firmware v7.06.r2388.

Well, W-lan is not so fast after all. Usually, a wired LAN connection of 100 mbps is substantially faster than even a 300 mpbs Wlan connection. There is much more overhead in a wireless connection (especially when security encryption is active) and there's a lot of interference with the signal resulting in a much less stable connection anyhow (lots of resending lost packets or even reconnects). You could try setting the send/receive channels of your Airport to different channels and see if it helps. Maybe this will also solve the difficulty your POHD is having connecting to your Airport.

WLAN never has the netto throughput that it's connection speed. With 802.11n you have a connection speed of 600 Mbit/s, and a throughput of 50-144Mbit/s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11). Divide that by 8 (Mbit/8=Mbyte) and you get what is shown when transferring a file (PCs typically show Mbyte, not Mbit). A LAN connection has far less overhead than a WLAN, so typically it is faster (of course a WLAN-n ist still faster than a 10Mbit LAN connection).

do'h... been too slow ;)
