Post Problem with the CARyan - Well it's quite a problem ...
Hi guys and ACRyan streamer users ...
First of all : I have "ACRyan mini 2" that i've bought 6 months ago ...
I've connected a "Samsung" HDD drive ( not flash , but spining disks )
of 1 TB using USB Hub ...
Sience then i've been uploading movies songs and much more to
my HDD using my remote connection between my computer and my streamer
VIA router.
So , from time to time I let my computer and my streamer
up all night and all day to copy lots of stuff downloaded from the internet
for later use ...
Today , my streamer began to reset himself ...
After several checkes I knew that the problem was my HDD ...
so I plugged my HDD to the computer and then my computer show me
a message that my HDD should be formatted before getting used again ...
and I lost all my movies - songs - pictures - almost 1TB of data ...
I've been noticed that the streamer doesn't support FAT system
and can only work with NTFS
the problem is that NTFS files system is much sensibile than the FAT files system
because with the NTFS you need to "Remove the device saftly" after every use ...
and that what cause the problem at the begining ...
because I shut down my streamer after every use without doing the
"Safty removable device" thingie ...
So -
1) If you could ( Next time you updating your software )
to let the streamer to remove my HDD drive saftly before shutting down ...
2) If not - how can I prevent this kind of faliure to occure next time
cause I don't want to lose all my data again ...

Sorry for the long reading section
and thank you for your answer ...

So long as you shut the Mini2 down in an orderly fashion with the power off key, you should not need to "Eject Safely"...

Sound like your disk is the problem, that's all.

Hope you had backups...

I didn't have any back up ( because I don't have another HDD with the same amount
of space ... )

Corrupted files can cause this problem with any HDD ...
If you try to copy things to the HDD and you've got packet loss
that could be the problem ...
NTFS files system again is much sensibile , much better than the old one ( FAT32 )
but still , need to do that "Saftly remove" thingie ...

And as far as I know , I don't have any problem with my Samsung HDD ...
and man - We're talking about Samsung here , problem with samsung ?
It's hard to say something like that...
Samsung's HDDs are one step behind WD ...

OK.... You are right of course. You know it all so why did I bother to make comment !!!!

I just wish I had a dollar for everyone that has said to me their disk is fine in the 40+ years I have been in the IT industry. I'd be a rich man.

Yes - I know , i'm a sys admin ...
I deal with this kind of problems ditto ...
This is the 1st time - so I can't tell wherever it could be from
but if this problem will appear again ..
I'll make a the refference , but for now
all I can say , that everything is OK ...

I don't mind to say that I have a problem with my HDD
( I have 3 years of warranty ) so : what the heack !?

I meen - we are talking about computers ...
but people are acting like that because they have hard time
thinking about them ( themselves ) or any of their stuff in their life
as malfanction ( just for your own knowlege ) ...

There have been problems with the handling of NTFS filesystems, causing file corruption. Especially errors during network copying seem to damage the file structure. The new beta firmware (7716) has a new NTFS driver which should solve these problems. So far I haven't seen reports confirming this, but the firmware is still very new.
In some cases corrupted files can be restored by connecting the drive to a PC and do a chkdsk (usually Windows asks this when you connect the drive). Unfortunately chkdsk cannot fix all the errors, so your mileage may vary. Recuva, an undelete tool from the makers of CCleaner, can undelete files from drives using a nice GUI. No guarantees, but worth a shot. Good luck!

7716 is a POS. Read the reports.

vanhal - I know what you are talking about ,
CHD - is a tool that can correct corrupted files and bad sectors .
I know that ... but it stinks - we use MHDD ( linux based ) - :)
but my HDD drive was locked at that point and wasn't avalible
for any use , so it needed to be formatted before getting used again

When i'm taking it back I remember from time to time that i've
plugged the HDD to the computer and I saw a message saying
that the HDD needs a check for bad sectors and corrupted files
but I ignored it and continue using it ...
maybe I have contributed to this problem by doing that ..
but still ... something could be done with the firmware that can
fix that problem from gettin files corrupted over the Wireless Lan ...

The main goal here is to plug the HDD to the streamer permanently
and to be confident that i'm copying files without any worries of getting
my HDD locked once more ...

By now , i'm not so sure how I can prevent it from getting locked again ...
my router can handle up to 150MB per second and as for my HDD
we are talking about USB 2 ( Not 3 ) so it can't have lags ...

Format your external drive Ext3 instead of NTFS (with GParted for instance). The Playons can handle Ext3 formatted USB drives and since you are using your network for file transfer, you will not be bothered by Windows being unable to access Ext3 drives without Ext3 drivers.

Some additional remarks:
You can also make backups of a 1 Tb disk on several smaller ones.
Shutting down the Playon with the remote control or the front button flushes the buffers and so is equivalent to "Safely remove hardware", which you do not need to do when you shut down your Windows PC either.
Using NFS instead of SMB (Samba) is more reliable.

GregiBoy, I've read some posts regarding the new firmware. I was just stating that 7716 is the first piece of software (that's what you meant right?) with new NTFS handling. It's clear it still needs some tweaking to get more bugs out.
