Well m8,
it's a big forum with lots of users and lots of questions
You could use a nas drive for storage and connect thru a samba/networkconnection to stream you media files from the nas to the pohd

Re: HOW TO CREATE A GREAT MULTIMEDIA SERVER
I would start by using a NAS to store all the multimedia files - perferably one with at least RAID 1 mirrored disks so you don't lose content if there is a disk failure. I would recommend a wired network - I have a 1GB switch into which my NAS, POHD Mini, Wireless router and one of the PCs are connected HD Videos tend to have a higher bandwidth and stream better over a wired connection. All the other PCs in the house connect via Wireless N. Most NAS boxes come with some embedded software - usually Twonky Media server, which provides you with a UPNP / DLNA server, and the Firefly Demon, which will present all your MP3 files as an iTunes library, as well as supporting various file formats, such as CIFS, NFS, etc. There are many ways to creat a home media network, many options for servers and storage, and a whole range of clients with differing functionality to choose from The trick is to have an idea of what you are trying to do, and keep your options open. I would stick to the major public standards, rather then, for example, going down the Apple route, as that then locks you into a particluar product line or devices that support it. Hope this is useful

Quote: and i want 20 playOn hd mini or maybe more can acces every multimedia files from the PC Twenty or more PlayOn Minis playing simultaneously may be a bit demanding for a single (or should I say simple) NAS and a home network. I think that professional advice is required as to network architecture (router, switches, backbone) and suitable server(s), if you want at least 20 Minis streaming media from a server simultaneously.

Re: HOW TO CREATE A GREAT MULTIMEDIA SERVER
so the keys are -NAS -RAID -Wired network but i still prefer wireless, because the distance between client and server would be <5km i would use Server : - a PC as NAS, - The D-Link Xtreme N® 450 Gigabit Router (DIR-665) with omni directional antenna, speed aproximately 450 mbps Clients : 20 POHD mini with USB wireless N with can antenna, speed approximately 300 mbps i already tested every my mkv files with "Mediainfo", its only take bandwidth less then 10 mbps, except 2012 movie 12mbps, speeds here only theoritically not actually would it be done?? any advice?? and remember this is only for streaming media as local network, accessing internet is an option demand for clients

Even though the maximum data it'll need to serve is 20 x 10Mb/sec, it'll possibly have to serve all 20 streamers at the same time, likely with different movies, so fast disk access/transfer will be a must. I've got a reasonable spec Netgear NAS box, and I seriously doubt it would be up to supporting 10 clients simultaneously. I've got a Windows 2008 server too, that definately would be up to the job (90MB/s network transfer, 15K SAS disks and a decent RAID controller) but obviously it cost a lot more than the NAS. I'd still be concerned about using wireless too..... 11n is fast but there's an overhead with each device attached to the access point, and 20 clients streaming 10Mb/sec won't leave much wriggle-room. If you're determined to use wireless, I'd recommend using multiple access points, with a 1Gb switch between them and the NAS/server. I've seen some Cisco capacity test reports using a single 600Mb/s access point with 20 clients within a ~50 square foot area and total throughput was 190Mb/s. BTW, I'm assuming you meant the clients will be less than 5m, not 5Km Ray Von

Re: HOW TO CREATE A GREAT MULTIMEDIA SERVER
seems its getting more complex.. this is a simple calculation about bit
Server - Hard drives SATA II 3 Gbps - Gigabit Ethernet 1 Gbps connects to wireless acces point, actually i wont buy router if there is an access point with such a great speed (600mbps) - Access point 600mbps or maybe more, tell me some brands with better speed please
Clients - 20 POHD minis 200 Mbps : @ 10 mbps
so i thought its gonna work..speed of server delivers more then speed of clients need what do you think???

Be aware that the wireless connection on a pohd can not always handle very high rate blu-rays This is a limitation of the cpu which also handles the network traffic. The pohd mini 2 is faster then the mini 2 but still can experience stutter.
