Post No Subtitles on MKV with v9.5.5.r7716
Hi,

as I tried to see an english MKV movie with subs I realized, that the activation of subs don't made them visible. Tried this with several movies, always the same problem. Playing the same files with an wdtv device the subs have been shown.

Then I tried the same with M2TS-Files and there the subs were working.

Is this a general problem?

Cheers

No it is not.

Inspect the MKV with MediaInfo and MKVToolnix

It could be, though. (sub/idx)
As I understood reading other posts r7716 has improvements for locally attached NTFS-Drives, but not for subtitles...

I tried out several firmware revisions from r3966 up to the latest official release r7317, none of them showed sub/idx-subs (Media-Info Codec-ID: S_VOBSUB) that were muxed in the mkv-container.
You can choose them by pressing the subtitles button on the RC, but they won't show up on the screen. (PGS subs do)

With r7317, I have only two options to get the subs:

Either I extract the subs (with MKVCleaver), convert them to PGS (with BDSup2Sub) and remux the mkv-file (with mkvmerge),

or I extract the subs to place them as separate .idx/.sub files beside the mkv-file

(edit:which has to be remuxed without containing subs, because if there are subs in the container, separate subtitle files are ignored) forget the red text.

That is the way I actually encode all of my MKV's of DVD Rips (with usually multiple IDX/SUB in the container) and I am positive that it works.

I am not at home today so I can't check it on the player but will tonight and report back.

I had some appointments change so I was able to test this.

I run firmware 7317 as when I tested 7716 which is a beta, I felt that it was a POS and fraught with bugs.

I have subtitles turned off in Setup->Misc->Subs.

This is the mediainfo from one of the titles that I have encoded but I checked at least 10 and subtitles are working fine.

When playing the movie, I press the Subtitle button, choose the language, press OK and then press subtitle again and the next subtitle appears.

Also, the player obeys all the chapter marks.

I suggest that you need to have a look at how your files are encoded.

PS: You can use "Subtitle Edit" to actually inspect subs in the MKV file.

Post Re: No Subtitles on MKV with v9.5.5.r7716
Hi GregiBoy,

you alienated me a little, so I took a small part of a movie with some subs in it and recoded it with Handbrake. And what should I say... the holy shit works!

After that I took the handbrake-encoded testfile, loaded it with mkvmerge GUI to remux it - subs aren't displayed anymore when I play the resulting file.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that mkvmerge uses libebml v1.2.3 + libmatroska v1.3.0, while handbrake uses libmkv 0.6.5 ...

So thank you for your reply. It inspired me to this test.

Phil

I'll test out out your findings myself later in the week.

What did you mean by "Alienated you"? Did you mean "Motivated you"? Coz alienated means that I have said something wrong to you that you didn't like.

Post Re: No Subtitles on MKV with v9.5.5.r7716
yes - I meant something like 'motivated'

Sorry, english is a foreign language to me. I'm german.

I took the wrong translation for 'verunsichern' from http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&search=verunsichern.

I posted about my findings in the german forum to inform Arne about it.

Thanks again!

I'm curious about your findings whether you can reproduce this behaviour...
