exFAT is also propriate Microsoft like NTFS.
There are third party drivers available but ACRyan doesn't like to spend any money.

I talked to some Linux bobo's on my University,
They told me that the software programmers of the PlayonHD2 probably don't no how to use the NTFS drivers, because problem's like in this forum and others should not occur with paragon and NTFS-3G drivers.
This indicates something concerning the capabilities of ACRyan...

this may explain why a year on we are still getting this reboot loop from building a database! and the lack of response!

Data Corruption- Files are corrupted to folders (example: xyz.avi -> /xyz.avi)

I have the playonHD2 now almost one year and still with the latest firmware PV73700_v9.5.3.r7716 I have the problem that files are corrupted to a folder with the same name, see example above.
Today this again crippled 6 files in that way.

Luckily I have a backup drive from which I can restore, that is also the way I find the problem during synchronisation.
Synchronisation is then not possible because a file cannot be copied to a place that already contains a folder with the same name.
The folder has then to be localised and manually deleted. A Scandisk does not fix the problem.
Another firmware like 5440 has exactly the same problem. With this 7716 update I hoped that is was fixed, but now it is clear that it isn´t.

It happens with the internal Samsung 1TB drive which came with the unit (yes, formatted in the unit) and also with a WD Elements 2TB connected to the USB port. Yes, I have done regularly a Scandisk with WinXP and also with Windows 7 on both disks, but the data corruption still remains.
Files are only transferred to the PlayonHD2 via the network over SAMBA, never over the USB. Files scanning is turned OFF.
Both disk drives are NTFS formatted. On the positive side I can confirm that the FAT formatted 32 GB SDHC card in the unit is used daily for storage of documents and has not given data errors to date.

With the other posters I agree that the error must be found in the NTFS implementation and can also be the root cause for other malfunctioning of the unit.
For instance, the favorite link on the HDD drive was converted from FavLink_HDD -> /FavLink_HDD. Needless to say that the PlayonHD2 does not recognize that. Once you find that, the only way to fix it is to delete the folder and make the favorite link again. Unfortunately, this happens also to other files like AVI, JPG, EXE, ZIP, DOC etc., so any file and any size. Also, sometimes I find files that are crippled by truncating.

This forum has several messages on NTFS errors and I hope that that ACRyan takes this as the highest priority to correct the NTFS issue in a new firmware, because unreliable storage make the unit useless for what it is sold.

ACRyan please respond on the course of action that is/has to be taken.

A lot of other users are hoping the same...

You can alleciate rhe problems by formatting the drives as EXT3. I have not had a problem since I did so.

Dear all, please tell me why my HD2 hangs every night!

My setup:
HD2 - no internal or external drives connected
- connected to Gigabit network
- connected to a Netgear DSG116 gigabit switch
- house professionally wired for gigabit networking as I got sick of the speed issues using the wireless adapters.

NAS box
- Freenas (latest release)
- 16Gb RAM
- 1 x NIC card
- NFS share setup

All I do is watch downloaded TV shows in MKV format, but to be honest it doesn't matter what I watch, the box regularly hangs every night part way through viewing and needs the power cord removed.

It's always happened no matter what Freenas software or hardware I have used. I suppose I could use a different NAS setup but the NAS operates perfectly fine for all other tasks.

Are you sure your Firmware has been flashed the SAFEMODE way? Did you machine have any issues / rebooting when the files transferred across? I have had a few MKV's crash during playback, but I know the file transfer process didn't work properly and affected all the files I copied not just the last one.

whats the best way to check files, as ever since i added some new content I have been having issues! I now have the scanning turned off and I transferred a db file i had previously backed up, so database still works minus some of the later things i have put on!

I'm guessing for music you can use mp3 tag? some of the info of the file will be missing, like bit rate etc if it's corupted? might have to try this when i get a minute! :)

Ah the good old "apply the firmware" again fix. :D

Yes it's been applied in SAFEMODE and numerous times.

I suppose I could do it again just for the hell of it, you never know, maybe this time around I might get lucky.

(You can tell I'm starting to get sick of these boxes - the Mini2 in my bedroom has just as many hang issues)
