Post Quieter Fan modding?
Warranty voiding of course.

But anyone looked into lowering the speed of the fan?

 I'm thinking of putting in a zener diode just cut down a bit and pushed in the two pin fan connecter.

Probably around an 8v zener.

Post Re: Quieter Fan modding?
Hey DTS fanboy,

There is a detailed description of several methods to make the HD2 more silent over in the German section.
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=13886
Basically, he describes 3 methods:
1) Half as loud
Open up the HD2, unscrew the fan. Put 4 small rubber gaskets between fan and board before putting it all back together. This made it a lot better, but the OP was still unsatisfied.
2) Absolutely silent
Completely remove the fan, leave one side of the HD2 open for cooling. The OP found no adverse effects after 8 days, HD did not get hot. Not the best way of course, as an open case doesn't look nice and might attract some dust.
3) Minimal noise
Replace the fan with a better, lower RPM fan. OP bought the fan and a set of silicon gaskets for 12 Euros. Fan needs a 2 pin connector however. As the screws of the new fan didn't fit he needed a drill to make the holes larger. This will of course definitely void your warranty... :D

Hope this helps. All credits to 123Teddy, the OP.

Post Re: Quieter Fan modding?
I received my HD2 a few days ago and honestly I don't know how it could be any quieter unless there wasn't a HDD in it. That's the only thing I hear when it's searching/scanning. Granted, my plasma screen (which is ancient but still rocks) has an external controller box with a load arse fan so that pretty much covers up any other noise. But even when hooked to a DLP and 9 feet away I can't hear it.

If I did, I wouldn't hesitate to open it up and put in a quieter fan, though. Should be pretty straightforward.

I took my player apart, disconnected the fan and just left the back plate off for cooling.

Silent operation and been running without a problem for a few days now.

Also as its only the back plate there no difference in the look unless you have your players backside facing you :D
