Post Latest release firmware broke the up/down buttons
I updated to the latest firmware and now the up and down buttons do not work the way they used to... They used to simply move up and down the channel list, but now they give somewhat random results and barely work at all!

This one is a real pain, so I'm willing to try hacking in via telnet to fix it if necessary!

Hello,

I*m sorry for a late reply.
Do you still have this issue? This is the first I've heard regarding this.

Have you changed batteries? If no change, have you tried to go back to a older version of firmware to see if it still there? If nothing helps, please contact your local re-seller or our service center for a repair / switch. You have these details in our support page.

Best regards,

G'Day Mikael,

You seem to have misunderstood...

There is NO issue with the hardware (unit or remote). The problem is what the unit does when it receives the "up" or "down" signal.

In the previous firmware, when watching DTV, pressing Up goes to the next channel (eg: On 5, goes to 6) and down to the previous channel (eg: On 5, goes to 4). You were able to cycle through the entire channel list just using Up or Down.

In the latest firmware, there is no way to know which channel it will go to, and commonly it just ends up simply changing to the same channel (eg: goes nowhere).

I'd be happy to "hack" to get this damn issue fixed!

Yes I did,

I think you mean, that in our previous SDK ( firmware that is +1 years old) you could switch channels in DTV by pushing up/down. The difference in the new SDK / firmware is that you need to press the 'Enter' button first, then choose the channel you want to switch to by pushing 'Enter' again.

If this does not work, let me know.

Best regards,

Hi Mikael,

Yes, I can press enter and choose the channel from the list, but this is IMHO a step down from the behavior that I am used to, but something like this I see a quite fundamental and a bit of a worry that it changed because:
  • 99.9% (a guess I admit, but very likely) of audio/visual devices have channel up & channel down buttons for good reason
  • Changing a one button operation [moving from channel 5 to 6] into a three button operation is a pretty big impact on functionality
  • The users guide says on page 35 "up/down" : "press to switch channels"

As the new SDK was a big change, I completely understand that the behavior can change and hence my patience [original post is almost 2 months old] and asking for help rather than screaming. I'd really like this to be considered to be a MAJOR usability bug and fixed, but I'm happy to "hack" something in (if possible) if others do not agree.

Code:
Firmware v8.0.20.r3120 - Asian Edition   v8.0.20.r3120  Initial firmware release(s)  21/07/2010
Firmware v8.0.20.r3420 - Asian Edition   v8.0.20.r3420                               05/08/2010
Firmware v8.3.2.r3582 - Asian Edition    v8.3.2.r3582                                18/11/2010
Firmware v8.3.2.r4824 - Asian Edition    v8.3.2.r4824                                02/12/2010

Firmware v8.5.3.r3966 - Asian Edition    v8.5.3.r3966  Change log                    10/06/2011
*Firmware_PV76120_v8.5.3.r5440_Asian_RC  v8.5.3.r5440  Release Candidate
Firmware v8.5.3.r7317 - Asian Edition    v8.5.3.r7317  Change log                    07/02/2012

Given the firmware list above, I assume the new SDK started in "v8.5.3.r3966"... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I just downgraded to v8.5.3.r5440 and the up/down buttons worked the old way! They only seem to have "broken" once we got to v8.5.3.r7317

Just a couple of comments on the "SDK ( firmware that is +1 years old)" that probably won't win me any good will, but unfortunately I can't help the need to vent...
  • Firmware releases are somewhat sporadic
  • No one knows if/when new releases may come
  • Many would consider releases too few & far between
  • The forum appears to contain a whole host of issues awaiting firmware updates
  • Firmware updates seem to introduce as many problems than they fix

If AC Ryan doesn't plan to do any more firmware updates, it might be a nice gesture to make the code open source for the community to get into.

PS: I'm a long time user and generally happy, just particularly passionate about usability as my wife refuses to use it the way it is and just goes back to using the TV. This completely stuffs me up as the one thing I particularly love, timeshift, always happens to be on a different channel on the DVR than the TV!

Thanks for your feedback.

I've requested this request from your side to our internal bug tracker as a feature request / change.I fully agree with this and if it was up to me it would be changed right away. Our developers will see this request and then decide if they can or want to implement or change this behavior. You can also downgrade for the time being to a older firmware if this is a major obstacle for your (or your wifes) everyday use.

Unfortunately it's not always that easy for us to change issues that are in the closed SDK that we are getting from our hardware manufacturer and that is the main reason we sometimes have issues to solve some reported problems. This is also the reason we can't provide 'hacks' or support these kind of requests.

When it comes to our forums and general DVR support. I've also requested this from my management and engineers as I cannot answer to this from a support point of view.

Best regards,

agree with sorky and I have recently flashed firmware (in the safe method) and now every time I go into EPG and skip to other channels in the EPG as soon as I press return X to exit the EPG it skips back to the previous channel I was watching NOT the channel selected in EPG - its sooooo frustrating !

It never did it before and now it does it no matter which ROM I flash

please some body tell me why - wish id never messed about with it now - original one was functionally better it appears
