Post Internal Hard Disk Capacity
I am in the process of buying the box (AC Ryan PV76120).
The website says that the box supports an internal hard disk capacity up to 2TB.
My suppliers has 3TB hard drives & when I asked him about fitting a 3TB internal drive to the AC Ryan PV76120 he told me that the manufacturers only guarantee up to 2TB capacity (I checked this out on this website). However, he told me that periodic software updates are issued & would not be surprised if in a forthcoming update, the capacity is raised to 3TB.
Any news on this? If possible, I would prefer 3TB (to have more storage capacity) but I would not like to pay extra to have something which, when fitted, would not function. Thank you.

Hello,

Officially the Playon! series supports up to 2TB internal hard drives. There are users reporting that some of the 3TB internal drives work, but also some indicate that it does not work. You can search the forum here for user based reference of these hard drives, but officially we cannot guarantee more than 2TB.

Sorry to insist. I am new to the forum & am not so familiar with the postings of the other members. It would be great if I can install a 3TB harddrive because that would increase storage capacity by 50%. Of course, as you have replied to me (Mikael), official you cannot guarantee more than 2TB. If was eyeing the following: 3TB Western Digital 3.5" SATA3 Hard Drive. (1) Is there anyone who installed this drive & may let me know if this particular make works? (2) The difference in price between 2TB & 3TB from my local retailer is €33. So if I were to risk it, if it does not work with 3TB what is the worst case scenario: no functioning at all of the 3TB drive or partial utilization i.e. I would still be able to access it but only 2TB would be used? Thanks in advance & regards.

Post Re: Internal Hard Disk Capacity
2TB is the largest single volume available using the standard MBR using 512 byte blocks. Disk manufacturers are getting around this limitation by using 4 KB blocks on disks to provide capacity beyond 2TB - theoretically up to 16TB. Several people have reported problems with disks using these 4KB blocks on the ACRyan boxes, even when they don't exceed 2TB volume size. I recall a posting by ACRyan staff saying that they cannot guarantee operation beyond 2 TB due to the limitations of the firmware. If you really need capacity on a single volume beyond 2TB I'd suggest you look at an alternative media player. It's a struggle with the current version to get stable operation even on an approved 2TB model. The firmware has been known to corrupt file pointer data, resulting in the loss of files.

I have to ask another question, maybe Mikael or Fat-Tony or some other member may respond. What about external hard drive? Does the 2TB limitation (so to speak) apply to the internal drive only or also to an external drive? That is, if I were to fit the ACR PV76120 with a 2TB internal drive & (say) a 3TB external drive would one expect that to give problems? Thanks in advance for any feedback that I may get.
