DVRhd: Was the hardware used by a different manufacturer too
Hello guys
Now the AC Ryan is bankrupt and upgrades not likely to appear, maybe the mods will allow me to ask the following question:
Was the hardware of the DVRhd used by a different brand too? Are they still supporting their device?

I think XTreamer had a model with the same chipset but you will have to do some research.
Also, don't forget that if you flash your unit with foreign firmware, you may "BRICK" it altogether!!!

Check http://www.iboum.com for other players with Realtek chipsets. However, using non AC Ryan firmware, especially Fantec, may corrupt the bootloader and will make your DVR HD useless.

I gave the reason why and it is up to you what you want to do. There are several examples on the forum of people who irrecoverably bricked their unit by using non AC Ryan firmware.

Hello Duivels
So the bootloader is restricting us, from using non-ACRyan firmware? Can we somehow change this? Like somehow put a different bootloader in?

Re: DVRhd: Was the hardware used by a different manufacturer
Some versions of firmware, replace or update the bootloader and some do not, get the wrong combination and you risk bricking the unit. Loading other manufacturer's firmwares is a risk. Andy

Re: DVRhd: Was the hardware used by a different manufacturer
What if we take the HD out of the DVRhd, connect it somehow to a computer and write the bootloader plus firmware on it, then place the HD back in the DVRhd?

Re: DVRhd: Was the hardware used by a different manufacturer
Matty, I don't think the bootloader will be on the HD. Pretty sure you don't need an HD in the box at all for it to work - you can record to USB-connected storage, and I think even via LAN or WAN to your NAS. It's software-on-chip. It is terriffic that we are thinking about preserving the value of this piece of legacy kit. I do think however that without any support from Realtek it will be a frustrating exercise. In any case newer chipsets will be just around the corner or they have already arrived which will be (a) better and (b) (one sincerely hopes) open source or fully accessible. It was the lack of this accessibility that killed the POHD, and maybe even AC Ryan. Good Luck to all.
