Post 2 Issues with my pohd mini... TrueHD Audio & PGS Subs
I tried this in the tech section but no reply a week later so i'm trying here...

I've just run into a couple issues which i'm wondering if they're firmware issues. I'm still running r4824 so i'm wondering will a firmware update to the recent official release fix my issues? I just use my mini basically playing from ext hdd's. So first issue...

1. I tried to play my first file with truehd audio & the mini jams up can't do anything but turn off at the powerpoint to restart or wait for about 20 seconds & it restarts itself. I tried a couple other files with truehd & same thing so is this a firmware issue bcoz i find it strange since the mini is supposed to support truehd (passthrough & downmix to stereo) but even then if it wasn't supported i would expect no sound but not the mini freezing up.

2. Mini won't display pgs subs although they are there to select but after selecting the subs they don't work nothing happens no subs show up. Is this a firmware issue or the mini just doesn't display pgs subs? i tried 4 diff movies pressed the subtitle button & select the subs but nothing shows up. The subs are original from the bluray & muxed into the mkv file.

All my movies are mostly 1080p bluray encodes some 720p & a few remuxs but all are mkv files. Also i've been thinking about buying the mini2 & chucking the original in my bedroom so does the mini2 also have these issues? I did a search here for these issues but it's hard to sort through everything some issues were simliar but not exact & i found mixed answers so i thought i'd ask directly here... appreciate any help thanx in advance.

1. Which RTL chipset does your Mini have, DD or DD+? Only DD+ is able to passthrough or downmix TrueHD.
If it crashes when you try to play a movie with TrueHD, then maybe you should try to reflash with the latest r5440 build using safe-mode.

2. I don't know any media players with RTL chipset which are able to play PGS sub in mkv container. It works in BDMV structure though .

thanx for the reply i appreciate it. well i'm not sure which i have in fact i've actually been trying to find that out. How do i found out which i have bcoz i looked on the box, the player itself & in the booklet but i can't find anything. it's over a year old if that means anything.

Thats a real shame about the PGS subs i sure hope ac ryan implement the ability to play PGS subs very soon because majority of remux's & certain high quality encodes use the original pgs subs from the BD & mux them into the mkv.

You can see which chipset your mini has in the Setup->Misc menu.

Otherwise, it is easy to transcode your current. mkv into a .m2ts using mkvmerge to extract the sub and TsMuxer to transcode? You do not need to reencode, and thus it takes like approx. 10 minutes for a 18Gb mkv (on a Win7x64 Core2Duo 2.53MHz laptop).

thanx again for your replies & i had been to setup but hadn't pressed it i thought it just showed the current firmare but after pressing it, it seems i have 1073DD C+.

I don't have many files with this issue but i'm coming across them more often & it seems to be the way ppl are going so i hope ac ryan looks at this. I would like to keep everything in mkv format but i appreciate your suggestion & giving me a workable option if needed.

Can any staff comment on whether they are looking at this?

first for the thrueHD set your video output in settings to 1080P @50Hz
then play a movie with Thruehd (not need to say for audio you need HDMI)

if there is audio now you are able to set it back to 1080 auto,
in some firmwares this is needed to make it work.

as for the MKV M2TS issue,
i understand you like to use MKV,
but MKV or M2ts are simply containers.
plus for m2ts the players processor needs less resources to play the file,
it needs a bit more for an MKV file.

so it would be better if you made the files M2ts,
especially if you should ever want to stream them,
an M2ts is streamed easier (as the processor needs less resources it has more over for the network).
plus thruehd or DTS HD ma also plays then better from an M2ts,
that is why it is used as the container for a Blueray Movie.

i don1t mux anything,
i just rip or copy the largest M2ts file out of the BDMV/Stream/ folder of an Blueray
and store that and play it.

all pgs subs audio etcetera works on al my players
only the 1073DD shows DTS5.1 and DD5.1 in case of any thruehd or DTS HD stream,
all others just play them fine.

;)
